Hi all

I'd like to buy some acrylic (clear) and have it cut for a Voron 3d printer.
Located in Cape Town.
Any advise as to where I would get this done to specifications and affordable?

If it is super expensive, I'm considering just buying the acrylic and using my router, but ideally I don't have to go down that path because I have a lot of other things going on at the moment and not sure I can spare the time.

Disclaimer: Yeah I know this isn't quite the right sub-forum, but given the 3d printer thread, I think many knowledgable people in the same sort of space would be around in this forum.

This is just based on Google search, nothing else:

Montague gardens, delivery available and cutting to size, along with cost calculator..

They have maximum bed size limit though, 700x500..

Probably a number of other laser cutting services you could contact for a quote..

I built a case for some homebrew electronics not too long ago. What I did was to score the acrylic with a stanley knife and a metal ruler, a couple of times over. Then you move the acrylic sheet to the edge and apply some sharp quick pressure, and it makes a nice clean snap. Of course this only works for straight cuts. I then printed some brackets to hold it all together.
Otherwise try https://www.maizey.co.za/ - They have been quite helpful up here in JHB, they have offices in CPT.

Any engraver can cut it for you to size within reason.

They have those lazer engraving machines and it cuts acrylic very easily.

OFC I started with Google, but the problem is that I found some really bad reviews or companies that seem to specialise in signage. So, in my mind, why not ask for others that may have gone through this

Ahh, ok this is good to know (DIY approach). I know about Maizey's but I assumed they only sell the stuff, not cut?

Call those guys, ask them all if discount is possible for the offcuts.

Expect to pay around R60 to R200 per hour for machine time and anything from R50 to R1000 for set up time.

you could also ask them to suggest someone as their clients will be the people cutting.

Just importing starting to look attractive, price wise. Very sad about that, I was hoping I wouldn't need to go that route, at least not for something this common place

oof,

Yea, I would suggest trying a DIY job then as posted above. Could take a couple of runs on the same cut but it would work.
Yeah I'm sort of inclined to give that a go. And maybe I can just use my triton router to route it out for the complicated parts

Maizey did do a cut for a friend of mine, so I think they will. I was doing my DIY on a Saturday so couldn't wait :)

Ah ok good to know. I'll give that a try, thanks for the advise :)

I have had stuff cut at Maizey as well. Gave them the sizes I want, they cut without any hassles.
