Hi all.

Which of the two would be the better to use for shooting cakes on a white background with slight reflection

THANKS

Perspex is a brand name. It is acrylic glass (PMMA).

Not quite glass :p.

But yea, its all acrylic, Perspex is a brand.

However when people say Perspex they usually mean cast acrylic rather than extruded acrylic.

Cast has a longer outdoor life and holds its colour better, but comes in a limited sheet size. Its also easier to form and mould.

For your application standard white extruded acrylic will be perfect.

Personally I would use a shotgun, but that's just the way I like to shoot cakes :p

Don't you find it a problem shooting cakes with a shotgun ?

The owners of the shop were really pissed the last time I tried ... :)

That's what it is sometimes called. Often used instead of real glass.

It is sometimes but not so often, because it scratches much easier than glass. Within a few months you wont be able to see through the thing. Just ask someone with an acrylic pc case.
The only way to clean it without scratching it is to polish it with brasso and thats a mission.

Hi all. Thanks for all the response. SoI can go into any builders warehouse store and ask for perspex right?

Also just to confirm, perspex is usually the white board thing which you can bend to form a base and backing used in most photo shoots to create the white background with reflections right?

It is actually used a lot as an alternative.

This being one of many examples. People want a transparent or semi-transparent side for their case, but using glass would be problematic. Then there are aircraft windows, the windows of some other types of vehicles, car headlights, some types of lenses, among other things.

Here's one design. Those sheets are probably acrylic. Acrylic sheets come in many colours and thicknesses though. You can also get from specialist places.

You could always try glass or matte glass and spray the back side white.
