I have a GoPro Hero 3 I got second hand this year. Quality has been mixed but I am still a beginner.

Is it worth it to invest in a newer edition or should I stick with this one for now? What are the main advantages of the new ones compared to my one?

I know stabilization is one factor but there are ways to significantly improve stabilization in Post Production.

The GoPro Hero 3 is pretty old (released in 2007 I think). Most midrange or higher smartphones released in the last 10 years will probably have better cameras.

Newer action cameras will have much better sensors, higher resolution, increased dynamic range etc which would give you overall better image and video quality. Then there's likely to be improved battery life, better weather sealing, mobile apps, new functions and recording modes, HDR, etc. -- the list is virtually endless... And then there's also comparisons between GOPRO's, DJI's, Insta360's, etc...

GoPro 3 is 2012.

I agree with you that most modern smartphones are better but the GoPro is still useful for adventure shots and angles which the smartphones can't get.

Are the Knockoffs worth it? I don't have money for a newer GoPro right now but I've heard from some that an older GoPro like mine is often better than the newer knockoffs.

I may be generalising but the generic \ knockoffs action cams are usually pretty terrible (especially the cheaper ones), I wouldn't risk it, rather stick with the known brand even if it is old.
