I remember several opvoks in my army days and not once were we hit with anything.
Physically and mentally exhausted, bruised, blistered and bleeding, yes!!!
Ja, I remember no-one hitting me with stuff. The 'opvoks' were crossing the border of abuse, but no hitting or touching.
In other incidents, one recruit died of exposure and another shot herself after being branded a "loose woman".
On their return they were apparently forced to carry around poles and when anyone dropped the poles, they were beaten with broomsticks.
People off themselves because of some words? In the army you get called a lot of things.
