Activating roaming once overseas?

Get a dual sim phone, keep the non data one that you set ur home number and get a local sim wherever you go to use fully

Is it possible to activate SMS roaming once overseas.

I tried with Vodacom on the app and also emailed lots of times, but no one answered or helped in any way.

But I don’t bother switching any kind of roaming on now. It just automatically comes on and I disable mobile data and still get sms’s as normal.

Yes but be VERY careful. Just ask your mobile provider to enable it but turn off data roaming on your phone unless you want a stupid looking bill.

Vodacom SMS roamer only activates messaging and disables voice and data automatically. Probably good advice to switch it off anyway mind you.

Me again. I should say that if you don’t have SMS roaming on (and I believe you’re screwed if you didn’t switch it on before you left) then depending where you are, sms’s prices are differ.

But how many sms’s will anyone send? It’s all about WiFi now and that’s available in many places.

The problem is that you cannot send an SMS to 123 or whatever they changed it to recently. It goes to the network that you are connected to in the UK or wherever you are.

More in the case for banking i was thinking.

No ones been able to solve my problem... all i need to do is activate SMS Roaming, is it that hard to to vodacom???

Someone tried to activate it once overseas. Couldn't.

Did you make an effort to phone vodacom customer care and try???

i have a family member that left for europe.
she sent "ROAMON" to 123 as instructed by the person at the vodacom shop at the airport
a reply was sent to her stating that the applications number has been changed, (keep in mind she is already inside the terminal now) and the automated message instructed her to use a new number.
That number did not work either.
Now that she is no longer in South Africa it is apparently impossible to activate roaming
so I am pretty sure this is Vodacoms problem

Have you read my replies Baz? It’s not going to happen mate.

Can I ask why you need it though? I work away and used to turn it on every time I left home. Haven’t done for a while though because I find it pretty irrelevant with WiFi everywhere and sms’s not costing so much on normal roaming.

Like @Spizz points out it really isn't needed I never turn it on just make sure data is off all should be fine.

This ^^^^

I’m in Indonesia at the moment and i don’t have it switched on, but I still get sms’s telling me my wife is using my credit card every 5 minutes.

Roaming is meant to be done before you go overseas.
Yes it can be done after the fact but unless you know someone very senior who will throw in a personal favor, then its not going to happen.

Sim Swop locally, put the new sim into a dummy phone, setup that phone to forward them messages onto the temp number in Europe.

I activated it from overseas not too long ago.
Phoned the vodacom call centre via skype on my phone and asked the agent to activate it.
Got an sms about 30 minutes later saying it was activated.

Wasn't expecting it to work, but guess I got lucky.
