This morning I bought a new MTN starter pack at the MTN shop in Northgate. The assistant RICA'd the sim, and then tried to activate it, to no avail. She said there was probably a temporary network problem, and I could myself at home later. I liked this idea above waiting around in the shop all day.

I have now been trying on and off since 10h30, still with no joy. When I switch the phone on, I get a "Welcome to MTN" message, and then two choices, i.e. to get a new number, or to do a sim swop. I choose the new number option, and here the phone is supposed to request and receive a number, and I restart the phone and start using it.

What actually happens is that I get offered the two choices, and I choose the new number option, and the phone instantly goes into normal use mode, with no comms delay, no display of a new number, and no restart required. Now nothing like calls and USSD work on the phone. Interestingly, if I try a USSD code, the phone seems to 'reboot' back to the new number or sim swop menu, with the same story if I choose something.

What could be wrong here? Maybe the RICA didn't work and MTN wont assign a new number? Maybe the sim is faulty? I know my phone isn't network locked because I have used both CellC and Vodacom cards interchangeably for some time now.
