Bear in mind that Cell providers are now allowed to self-provide, so in theory, they could start installing their own links between towers, and cut Telkom out of the loop.

That's what I'm getting at, do any of the cellular providers interconnect with each other yet? From yours and web's answers it would appear not yet.

Interconnection with each other seems the wisest solution with cellular number portability in the offing and if they do it for number portability then why not for all other traffic?
 
Be careful - don't shoot yourselves in the foot. Telkom is evil - but just dropping them might cause more harm than good.

1) Vodacom introduces competition to Telkom. In fact, Vodacom is the only company effectively competing with Telkom. Just look at HSPDA and the iBurst marketing.

2) Dropping Telkom will also meaning dropping small ISPs who certainly doesn't deserve the treatment.

3) Paying more for less is never smart. If you download 10GB a month using a desktop then ADSL makes more sense than HSPDA.

4) Telkom is just more evil that the other companies because it had a monopoly first. I'm personally woried about MTN's influence on the entire African continent in 10 years time.

I personally would suggest - in the case where all things being equal, choose the competitor. But making emotionally charged choices wouldn't make that much of a difference. In fact, it will probably lead to more evil. If Neotel wants to compete it should be more than the on fact that "We are not Telkom." They need better service, better prices - they need to be chosen on merit, otherwise their competition is meaningless.

For a long term healthy telecoms environment we need to make choices on merit. Competition is not about punishing companies or making emotional decisions. It is about competition on a day-to-day, contract-by-contract basis between all competitors.

Don't get me wrong - I hate Telkom just as much as the next guy - but hate won't solve the problems. Hate does not encourage competition. The objective should be "Quality Affordable broadband for all" instead of "Kill Telkom".
 
If Neotel has better products at better prices people will naturally migrate to them. What good is punishing Telkom if Neotel is even worse at the end of the day. There's no need to boycott a single company if true competition exists.

telkom is in bed with all of them as long as that is the case she will always be a whore and we will always be obliging customers!....unless we realy get off of our fat lazy useless ass's nothing will ever change?

Big bussiness should not be so camplacent and be more pro active in actualy physicaly doing somthing....please come out the real mean and women of change ..... go away the moaners and i will still just carry on regardless and do nothing about it , . ...oh i will blog about it though....long live the real people who make a real diferance,.....where is our champion of reform?

true costs of telecomunications in SA compared

We arrange for a meeting with the management of the SNO, to discuss their assistance they can provide to us.
- We write a nice article to be published in Drum/Huisgenoot/You (yes, common, but, between them more than 50% of the population reads them) about the true costs of telecomunications in SA compared to the world, and how that influences the man on the street/our economy.
- Wait for Telkoms response, and use that and our article to generate an pamphlet for general distribution.
- We get a few sponsors to print a few T-shirts.
- We actively (once or twice per month) start to distribute pamphlets at intersections regarding Telkom, their impact and how we can get them to listen. In the pamphlets we requests people to terminate Telkom related services, and to go to compeditor.
 
The first and easiest step step to becoming free of Telkom is to get all your family using Dial up to swich to Virgin mobile. I took my dad from paying 120 rand + isp charges + 8rand a call (R200+ per month)

Down to just R20-50 per month

Virgin airtime rolls over forever
 
Telkom profits split between every person in the country is R1200 per person.

Already using MTN, and will switch to Neotel as soon as I have coverage :(
 
Also Kicked Telkom over a year back, Using MTN only. No Neotel coverage.
