So on my 4mb line I generally get download speeds of about 400kb/s (on p2p).

Two questions:
1. My understanding is that this is the best download speeds I'll get on 4mb. Correct?
2. If I upgrade to 10mb line, what would be my max download speed (all other things equal) then? 1mb/s?

Perfect world:

10 will be about 1mb
20 2
40 4

I have a 40 and I get around 4.26

If that is daytime download speeds on P2P then you have a good account, and that is like line speed for you

When using ADSL take into account about a 13% protocol overhead for pppoe, atm, tcp/ip etc. It's impossible to get full line speed.

line speed * 1024 / 8 * 0.87

So 4meg * 1024 / 8 * 0.87 = 445.44 kbps
10meg * 1024 / 8 * 0.87 = 1113.6 kbps

Here are the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM speeds possible in a perfect world with NO overheads. :)

1mbps = 128 kbps (Download)
2mbps = 256 kbps
4mbps = 512 kbps
10mbps = 1,280 kbps

Real world max speeds speeds,

1mbps = 108 kbps (Download)
2mbps = 217 kbps
4mbps = 435 kbps
10mbps = 1,088 kbps

FIFY. I think this is what you meant.

Yeah right.. I get 425kbps most of the time on my telkom 4mb line.

Mine is a bit strange, but something I couldn't complain about.

I have a 200mbps line from WebAfrica, which should convert to around ~25MB/s.

For some unknown but fortunate reason, i download on Steam, Origin, Blizzard and Nvidia GeForce experience at 37 to 42 MB/s stable. And my Speed tests show 400mbps speeds. It's fantastic
