Hi guys, hope all is well XD
I am looking into implementing a permanent solution to adverts / adservers etc on our domain.

Anyone out there tried this yet ?
I am aware of 'Firefox adblock' etc etc, but would like this to be a centralised implementation

We are running SBS 2008, and sofar I have considered adding in some DNS entries for the most common ad servers out there.
Any suggestions welcome :)

I do know of a site which contains all the common ad serves maintained and updated very frequently

Adding that to the hosts file on the sbs server should do the trick. What's the problem?

HOSTS files are machine specific - the workstations do not inherit the contents of server file (unless it can be 'rolled out to them?)

yep, that what we did as a test. copied a host file to all machines using a script. Will see if i can find it but we actually downloaded the host file with all the blocked entries already filled in. But in the end we spent $$ on a proxy which solved all our problems. (for desktop users, still considering it as a permanent solution for users with laptops.)

Thanks for the recommendation sofar, I do know that adding a proxy will work wonders - but we already have so many layers between the user and the net, don't want to spend even more to get these blocked.
My idea behind it is out of own initiative, so I was not tasked to do this.

We do have quite a strong firewall thats hardware based - but for the life of me I cannot get why they do not have any built in ad blocking services (none that are evident anyway)

If you could hunt down that script it will be awesome obviously !@!

Had a look but could not find the actual script, but that part should be easy using vb or a simple batch file to copy the host file to the user pc.

This is the website we got the host file from:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Another site we looked at:

http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/

I actually run one of these at home to help cut down on ad's etc.
