Hello!

My brother is going overseas soon, and he is going to bring me a laptop from overseas. Could someone tell me if I would need an adapter / transformer? Its coming from Canada. Where would one buy such a thing, and what type would I need to get and how much does it more or less cost?

Many thanks for your help in advance.

You'll just need a plug socket so that the canadian plug can plug into a SA plug. Cost like R50 from brights iirc. Otherwise the laptop power brick is auto sensing and will happily work off 110 or 220V

Most if not all laptops these days have "universal adapters" which are rated from 85V AC up to 250V AC, i.e. can be used on 115V or 230V systems as found in the US and Europe, so I am sure there is no need to worry.

If you know the Laptop model number check out the manufacturers specs to verify the input voltage range. Worst case you can always buy a replacement locally if it is 115V only, however I doubt that will be the case.

Ok, thank you very much, I will have a look at the manufacturers specs. I just dont want to plug it in and then the whole thing explodes.

Many thanks!

When you get it just have a look at the label on the adapter and if it says INPUT: 100-240V 50/60Hz you are good to go seeing the SA 230V 50Hz falls in that range.
