Adaptor for DVI-D to DVI-I

So the new monitor is great and all but my graphics card is DVI-D and the monitor connector is DVI-I

Is there an adaptor I can get?

EDIT: OK it exists, but where to find one?

hmmm can't you plug the DVI-D cable into the DVI-I connector?

dude, relax.

a dvi port is capable of carrying two types of signals, analog and digital.

if the dvi port only has analog signals present on the pins, it is termed dvi-a (and is effectively a vga port with a dvi pinout)

if the port only has digital signals, it is termed dvi-d (and has no analog present, nor can you plug it an dvi-->vga adapter as no vga signals exist on the port)

if the port carries BOTH analog and digital, it is termed dvi-i...yaya...the one-port-does-all-solution

In your scenario, the gfx card outputs digtal on the dvi connector, and runs it to the monitors dvi connector which can accept both analog OR digital. No need to panic, you are getting the best from it.

Ok the DVI-D Female on my gfx card looks (something) like this

Having looked at the manual, it seems like werner says, those four extra pins around the flat pin are only there to carry the analog signal (blue green red analog and just analog)

What I think I may try, is to drill 4 holes into the female gfx card socket so that the four pins will fit in (even though they don't do anything.)

Does that sound logical to anyone or am I missing something?

Why can't you just get a DVD-D cable ? It should fit the DVI-I port as well ? Or "remove" the 4 pins on one side of the DVD-I cable ?

must be an oddball graphics card...it's been a very very long time since I seen a gfx card with dedicated dvi-d connector.

you have a few options
1) find a dvi-d only cable (probably scarce)
2) remove the dvi-a pins (may break dvi-i cable doing this)
3) warm up a needle or a small nail, push it into dvi-d socket on gfx card to melt the plastic where the -a pins on the cable would go. I think a drill may be too gung-ho and you dont actually want to drill into a gfx card.

Option 2 would be my preferred method, modify the (cheaper) cable end...that way if you stuff it up you can buy another one. Hopefully, it unscrews on the monitor end too

for the sake of reference , who makes the card? what card is it? a got of coupla gf4's and radeons here, and they all have dvi-i

<edit> just pulled a gf3-ti200 out the cupboard and even that has dvi-i.!!

Thanks that worked a treat, I guess the flat pin doesn't do anything either coz I buggered that slot up a little bit too, but now it's connected digitally and working fine.

The story behind the card goes like this. Three shops I went to had all been stung by buying the Asus GeForce 5200FX cards (in fact I'd bought the bloody thing from one of them) they all quickly realised that
1. the product doesn't ship with a DVI-D cable
2. All the monitors are now DVI-I

the flat pin is the analog ground return pin, no worries if you are using digital.

yup mine is, goes straight into the back and disappears behind the back cover, no connectors at all on the back.

don't you have analog (D-SUB) input as well? or it is some sort of adapter that converts the DVI to D-SUB? Because it will be quite ugly if you want to use analog and there is this DVI cable hanging unused ... ?!
