Hi

The company only has 1 Windows server with Windows 2008 on , I want to add a ADC and then sync the data from the PDC to the ADC. They use the server for Pastel and file sharing. What program can I use for sync (Deltacopy?)

Their PDC went down the other day and it caused a bit of problems, any other ideas are welcome.

Thanks

What data do you want to copy ? just normal file shares? if so you can use sync-toy it will get the job done , or do you want to transfer the roles from the PDC to you new ADC ? , if you are currently using AD , then your second ADC can be another primary AD intergrated/ Read Write copy of your PDC ( just without the roles) , as far as pastel you will probably have to reinstall on the new server test that it works then move users over and then Reinstall the failing PDC after you have transferred the roles of course

I want to create a backup domain controller, and have all their data on the BDC as well so if the PDC goes down I can switch them over to it,

Ok, first off there are no more PDC/BDC's... that was way back in NT4 only....

Domain controllers will only sync Active Directory related services, not the whole server and it's data.
Create another DC and when the first one fails you can must seize the rolls to the second one if you cannot get the first one back up.
For the Pastal data, well, can't help there unfortunately as I have never worked with that but contact Pastel and see what they suggest...
For user data there are plenty of sync tools, MS synctoy works, or you can just create a batch file, that's up to you which way you want to...

Do I have to use microsoft server or can the "BDC" be a linux distro and if so what do you recommend?

No. If you want to sync Active Directory, then the second DC has to be Windows server obviously. AD is Windows.

If you want to have a spare server to handle domain logins, network permissions, DNS etc then you need to have a secondary Windows server set as a DC replicating AD with the main server. If main server goes down and you can get it up you seize the roles from the main server and carry on. I assume you have a windows domain rather than a workgroup.

If you just want to replicate the data you could use a liux box and replicate the data to an SMB share on the Linux box. But if it is Pastel and your uses are setup in a client / server setup it is not going to work. As far as i know Pastel does not work on Linux.

You also have to consider the costs of licenses etc if you want to put in a secondary Windows server.
