Well, you can stuff around on the (bandwidth-restricted) PCI bus or Get Real(tm) and move up to PCIe with something like the LSI MegaRAID SAS8704ELP (or its bigger, 8 port brother (RAID6 FTW!), the SAS8708ELP), which also not only let you run (cheap 'n cheerful) SATA drives, but SAS too. Of course, if you have only PCI available you may have to go that route but it'd be a waste to invest in that direction with PCIe so readily available.
