This week, I am adding a second computer to my dsl. Now I was wondering how I should work it. I have a little 5 port hub, and a DLINK 300T modem, (ethernet connection)

I would like the 2nd pc to access the net thru my main box, so that I can monitor bandwith. I am guessing that I need to let my main box handle the dhcp, and turn this off on the dsl modem. Then give ip numbers to the modem and the 2nd pc.

Anyone who is able to clear this up, or offer a better method, all help will be appreciated.

Well. A very simple method would be to let the main pc do the PPPoE negotiation. You will have to set the DSL router in modem mode and not into bridge mode.

Then enable Internet Connection sharing on the main PC which will automatically let it act as a DHCP server to any computers connected to it via the hub/switch.

Now you can use something like NetMeter to measure bandwidth usage on the Internet interface for that specific PPPoE connection.

Steps:
1. Check router on how to set it to modem function only

2. Setup PPPoE on main pc.
. Open Netork Connections
.. Click on CREATE NEW CONNECTION
... Click NEXT
.... Select CONNECT TO THE INTERNET
..... Click NEXT
...... MANUAL CONNECTION
....... NEXT
........ CONNECT USING BROADBAND CONNECTION REQUIRING USERNAME & PASSWORD
......... NEXT
.......... etc...

3. Enable connection sharing
. Go to Network Connections
.. Select the PPPoE connection you just setup.
... Right click and select PROPERTIES
.... Choose the ADVANCED TAB
..... Select the ALLOW OTHER NETWORK USERS TO USE THIS COMPUTERS INTERNET CONNECTION....
...... Etc...

Download NetMeter (http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/)and have fun! Remember to configure it to only measure bandwidth for this PPPoE connection...

Those little 300T's work well. Simple, no mess, no fuss, stable.

Where did you get hold of one? I'd like to get another to swap and change custom firmware but dont want to ruin my current one in the process.

Got it from my brother, but as to wokking well. let me explain

I can connect to the net if I plug it directly into my pc. But plugging it into the hub, a 3Com officeconnect Dual Speed 16 port hub, does not work. The hub does not see the modem. Now I need to use the hub to share the internet connection, between two pc's

Antowans suggests above work as far as making a connection to the net, I can do it as a modem or in bridge mode. both allow me to connect to the net, but not thru the hub
