I've got an existing 8kw - if I add ANOTHER 8kw unit then can I use a different battery brand (as it's a different inverter) or do I need the same?

From my limited knowledge, the short answer is no.

Everything needs to be the same as they run in parallel

If you add a second inverter if it isn't the same one as the old one that can properly parralel

(They have to be same model with same firmware to be able to parralel )

you have to seperate your load again to have 2 seperate critical load sections in the db and decide which loads goes on which inverter ie like you have it separated now, You have a critical loads circuit and a non critical loads, just 3 sections instead of 2 then

They don't have to be the same exact firmware. When the hardware changes slight, so does the firmware version.
But I think the rule of thumb is that if you have the latest firmware for each device at installation, then it will work.
On the main sunsynk thread it was covered a few months ago.

There's also no separating of critical loads. The 2 inverters connect to the same load and same battery bank.
The aux ports stop being of any use as far as I know, at least with generator input. I could be wrong with aux outputs, but gen input doesnt work. Check the wiring diagram in the sunsynk manual and you will see the load connections, grid connection, etc.

Yea if they are parralel then you don't have to seperate/divide the critical loads

Yea it makes sense to have the battery bank as a communal bank and to have them properly running parallel

That way you don't land up with battery capacity issues on one while you need it on the other

Or not being able to use all the capacity because stuff isn't on the rail you have spare capacity

I was meaning if they aren't properly parralel then separating is needed
