Don't store anything but standard data types on an DB. Images belong a web server, and a domain related URL to this image should be the only thing storedon your DB; because:
  1. Web servers were designed to store and serve up images ... + a lot more.
  2. Web server farms are easy to scale.
  3. Web server traffic can easily be proxied.
  4. Internet domain URL can easily be remapped / relocated without affecting client applications.
  5. Caching image from a web server is easily; e.g. locally, or directly on the client, etc...
  6. Loading can be animated e.g. loading up a small pixelated version, whilst the full one downloads
  7. Multi-threading: multiple images can be loaded in the background on different threads.
  8. ....I could go on... but hopefully you get the point.
