I phone TISCALI Worldoline this morning regarding the 3gig telkom cap and they told me the following . .. . .

ADSL PLUG IN
To assist ADSL users who need the extra capacity to carry them through the month, should they reach the initial 3GB cap imposed by Telkom, Tiscali have introduced the ADSL Plug In.

All existing Tiscali ADSL subscribers can purchase the top-up option in increments of 3GB for a fee of R250 per month per additional 3GB.

I phoned MWEB and they said that they were away of it and were working on their own product.

What do you thhink ????

I simply asked my provider to give me a second ADSL account which gives me an additional 3GB per month. The only hassle is switching between accounts when I reach the cap on the first one, but it's a minor problem.

I admit though that I got a special deal from my ISP, but will not disclose the details in an open forum.

Having a second account that you have to activate may be a advantage, you can use the first one after its been capped for local only use and the second if you need some international resource, then at the end of the month use up the remaining gigs on the second account on what ever you want.

Sounds like a good idea. Only problem (for me that is) is that I run a proxy server which provides a shared connection and keeps the ADSL connection alive (auto-connect after disconnect). I also run a mailserver using the same connection. Switching between the two accounts can become rather a chore.

The one advantage, however, is that I can switch to the account which is capped when I'm away (which is frequent) which prevents anyone else from killng the 3GB in my absence.

What crud, there is no way I'd even bother getting adsl right now. I spend half the year in the UK and enjoy adsl there, but a 3gb cap is unreasonable and MEAN and defeats the point of adsl in the first place (in the uk they were considering capping heavy users to 1gb/day) which almost sounds reasonable. Tell em to get stuffed. I certainly wouldn't encourage them by signing up for more accounts.

I don't like the idea of subscribing to extra accounts, because that means you're paying every month.

A better option would be to be able to "top up" bandwidth on demand - go to the DSL website, sign in with your password, and buy additional Gb on demand. Then you're only paying for bandwidth you'll actually use...

Incidental question the approx R250 that the ISP's charge how much of it goes to Telkom (SAIX)? I suspect a pretty good portion.

I hear Somewhere something like R185 goes to Telkom(not Telscum Any more because it upsetts telkom BLA:)

I dont think any of it goes to telkom. I spoke to a techie once when i was still thinking bout getting ADSL and he told me if u have a second number to dial into ure ISP then u can get another 3 gig.
If u think bout it they put the cap one the number that u dial i think. so everytime u switch to a different number u have a new 3 gigs. hehehe
although this is just theory. I donna have ADSL cause its kinda pointless at the mo.

New service by Telkom broadband speeds up to 5kbps for only R1k a month. heheh

ISP's buy the ADSL service from Telkom as resellers.

We have multiple accounts from a number of providers and we hop from account to account as and when the cap is reached on any given account.

It may seem over the top but we are a business that relies on having fast access in order put food in our faces (and even with multiple accounts it's still cheaper than a 64 Kbps leased line).
