Just a question but I doubt many can help, thought I would give it a try though.

I have a user who works with pdf files on a frequent basis. For this reason I have installed Adobe 7 professional on her new laptop as she has the license for the software. She now has windows XP with latest service packs, and others with the same image do not have the same problem.

The weird problem she has is that if she tries to open pdf files or pdf hyperlinks the program does not open, although one notices a brief flash of the screen. A workaround is to open Adobe Reader and leave it open, then any pdf file you open will show.

So as one can see its not a serious problem but an irritation nonetheless. I have uninstalled\reinstalled and it didn't fix the problem. I can't quite imagine why it would do that??

The problem may be with permissions. Is the user a standard user. If so, they cannot run programs that make edits to certain parts of the registry. Try logging in as an Administrator User, opening Adobe, letting it create it's default settings, then logging out and letting the user try again. Another cheat, although not secure is to give the user full control of the Adobe Directory, as opposed to read and execute only. Basically check if it is only an issue under her profile.

I'll take a bet on the OS having gotten confused as to which app to use to open .pdf. To check this, do:
- get properties on a .pdf
- on the [general] tab, check what app is assigned to "open with"
- if not Acrobat Pro, click [change] ...and you should know where to go from there :p

Ok I tried both and still the same problem. However I apologize on a slight but an important piece of misinformation. It actually only occurs on hyperlinks in Excel linking to pdf files. Any other filetype is fine.

I even re-installed office and tried repairing and reg/unregserver with no good result. Adobe professional still flashes and disappears, but if you open the pdf file directly it opens fine meaning that there is no problem with Adobe and is most probably something else.

I take it you've updated to 7.09, sounds like an association problem, recommend bdt's advice, double checking always helps

Believe it or not we are not aloud to install Adobe 8 reader. Our updates are pushed from central and we must stick to the standard or else !! :p

Anyway I have asked the user to give me an appropriate time tomorrow when she may be on meetings or such so that I can sit in front of the PC and uninstall everything fully and re-install from scratch. I won't format though as that alone could take more than a day with all the backups and paperwork etc

Paperwork? To format a pc? Why not a kick in the balls while you're at it?

Have you tried deleting all temp files? I've had problems with too many temp files making Acrobat freeze, although that probably isn't the problem here...

Adobe 7 (even viewer) and hyperlinks = known bug. Gimme a minute and I'll try and find the link

/Update : looks like upgrading to 7.0.x will help.

/Update 2 Note this is Adobe Reader 7.0.0 that's giving the problem.

Thanks all. Luke7777 that page seems to be the exact problem 100% :D will definately give that a try. I did upgrade Adobe 7 reader before to another version though but maybe it was a dodgy one :)

Even though Office2000 PRO was not on the applies to list the correct update fixed the problem.

Thanks man :D
