I am absolutely sick and tired of this Adobe Software's inane ability to always bugger up my browser by downloading massive PDF's in-line for me without my consent! And then ... after having forced acrobat to cease and desist by killing it's in-browser processes, it sneakily starts up another freaking program that then begins downloading a massive update of itself to even further clog my teeny weeny gprs connection to death. It's almost worse than bloody spyware!
:mad:

/me goes looking for a firefox plugin that will return control of links to pdf's back to me.
/me runs sysinternals autoruns to once again remove all the bloodie adobe crap that has been put there to auto-start.

Pfffft!

These Adobe bastards are leaning very far over the spam-ware fence.

I have to agree, in later version, Adobe always wants to update itself. Normally I'd say that is ok, but I notice you have no option to turn the bloody thing off anymore, like you could in version 7 or earlier.

I'm tempted to look at 3rd party viewers, Reader is too big these days. I don't need a tenth of the features it appears to have hidden away.

Versions 7 or earlier's the best... the newest ones is too bloated - and you only want to view PDF files anyway... :rolleyes:

If you want to stop your reader from doing an auto update, on your computer go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe. Now here you will find a folder called "Updater". It may have some number after it like Updater5, Updater6 or something similar. Just delete this folder.

I installed firefox's PDF downloader addon ... nice! Much better. Thanks Nod.

P.S. A also noticed and installed an addon called flashblock, it lets you choose when an embedded flash thingy is run, also nice.

I'll look into foxreader, thanks ATI.

Thanks peopleses, I feel better now.

You can also try PDF-Xchange Viewer.

For PDFs with very complex vector graphics, both Foxit and PDF-Xchange sometimes do not render it properly, but those are rare cases.

For general PDF viewing these 2 viewers are great.

OMW ... I get an email from SARS e-filing informing me that they have issued an IT34 (We have analysed your tax return and have decided that we owe you 23 cents).

But, the file extension of the IT34 is ASPX.

Now, every body who has ever heard of anything about Microsoft's Active Server Pages technology would know that ASPX is the file extension used for the new Dot-Net Active Server Pages. Previously they used the extension ASP, so ASPX is a logical extension.

What on earth possessed Adobe to also use ASPX as their extension as well?
What's wrong with PDFX?
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT!

Now my MS Visual Studio Development tool tried to open the file as an editable webpage and went absolutely ballistic.

ok, open acrobat reader.

menuitem-->edit/preferences/internet
untick
"display pdf in browser"
untick
"allow fast web view"
untick
"allow speculative downloading in the background"

now it will behave, and clicking on pdf links will open a save dialog box.

+1. The only other problem is why the fck is it so big! It's only a reader! :confused:

@werner .. only until adobe's next "patch".
@arthur .. windoze file explorer -> right click on .aspx file -> open with -> Abode is listed in the list of applications associated ... so it's Adobe, not SARS.

Not necessarily. If you search any online filetype resource the extension ASPX is not listed for any Adobe application. Either an application or another user did the association in your Windows, but I doubt it's part of the Acrobat Reader installation.

Normally I delete the update.dll file in the Adobe folder in Program Files and that sorts out the auto updater.

Definitely not another user.
I wonder if Firefox is doing automatic association using the mime types ...
