Is Adobe products too expensive?

Can they play more on the economies of scale.
Drop the price and sell more.

Too expensive, I hope they are going to try a subscription model for the software which should be way cheaper.

Not only pricey, but even with the freebie Adobe Reader, the updates are usually so bloated and the software is so intrusive, that millions worldwide have switched to leaner alternatives like Foxit Reader.

I bought the suite with a student discount, took a month to get it activated.

Totally agree. I use foxit reader :D

Speaking Mac here...

The problem is the upgrade price. I bought CS2. The only thing I get from the deal if I upgrade to CS latest is support for my current OS. Nothing new (that is of use to me). In fact, this has been a persistent problem.

CS3, while competent on Intel-only hardware, still has functions that require PPC or Rosetta. In Lion, Rosetta is no longer present so it is either upgrade Adobe or run Snow Leopard. And if you buy new hardware, the Adobe upgrade price becomes mandatory as that hardware only has lion. So it's price effectively doubles. And then, someone cracks the s/w and suddenly piracy becomes a little easier on the conscience.

Right now, CS2 to CS5 upgrade is $949 = R7256. Just to use software I already licensed on my new machine. And the next time a major shift happens in operating systems, another big outlay.

No way!

Its strange how there student prices are so much cheaper.
Got this from the http://www.odsonline.co.za/ :

Photoshop Extended CS5
Normal price:R10 999
Student price: R1499

CS5.5 Master Collection
Normal price:R29 499
Student price: R4199

Adobe's products are aimed at the professional segment of the market. They themselves have said they are not interested in the consumer segment (i.e. CS5 Master Suite - After Effects, Photoshop, Premiere etc.).

Hence their high end pricing...

Nah, that's the price they've set for their wares and they seem to be doing ok. If you don't like it/can't afford it, there are alternatives and they even have a cheaper line of products as well. They may not be as feature filled or easy to use but the price is more palatable.

You could always go open source, Gimp and Inkscape are free.

So what would be the alternative to Adobe's Acrobat Pro?

Our company had some enquiry about those student prices before, being so cheap and all. When I asked about them to the distributor, nearly got my head bitten of for asking about them being cheaper as if I was automatically going to fake being a student to get cheaper prices - can you blame me???

Funny thing is, I asked the distributor, what happens after you're no longer a student, apparently you're supposed to own up and let Adobe know / purchase the retail version again at full price....fat chance!

For free software, also give Paint .NET a try.
