I tried bypassing the filter and unplugging my phone, but it didn't really make a difference.
But there is progress:
After moving the phone cables away from the power supplies and AC cables, I traced my phone line. When telkom installed the line years ago, they left the rj11 box loose with about 5m worth of cable coiled up. We asked for this as we weren't sure we would like it.
I cut out the coiled 5m cable, and presto, I gained 1.2 db in my SNR and hec errors are now once a minute. My attenuation is still the same, but the line is more stable. No line drops for a day now on full 20mbit.
I don't think the extra bit of cable was faulty, probably something to do with the fact that it was coiled.
