Hi Guys

I am about to get adsl for the 1st time. what router should i get between
Netgear
Billion
Linksys

Which one has the best value for money in the price range of between R500-R800 range and where in cape town can i buy one.

thanks guys

Recently dought a D-Link router with wireless from CafeViva for R629, it seems to work just fine...

I love Telkom's Billion 800GVT. They are bulletproof, but the cost of R1,400 is a bit steep.

The same thing with a Billion label is the BiPAC 7404VGO. It should be cheaper, but I have yet to work out where to buy them.

I use and recommend the D-Link DSL 2640U Wireless G ADSL Modem+Router - the same one as burn suggested above.

Stay away from D-LINK. There is no support.

Huh?

I've always had good service from the D-Link support line in Cape Town.
In terms of hardware, with the warranty, like most ADSL modems - if it's faulty within the first year, it's just swapped-out.

They give a lifetime warranty on their routers
but give you the runaround if you dare try and
get one swapped out.

The Cape Town people are as dozy as hell.

Assuming you didn't buy from D-Link directly... which distributor gave you the run around?

Hey Stevie

i would suggest a Billion 7300G. Nice little router has the basic features that a normal home user would require and the support is good. Goes for around R700 and you can get them from Matrix Warehouse, Web Antics Online or Digital Planet Online.

You need to decide on what you need from the router/modem:
- Are you going for a modem/router combo, or seperate modem and router?
- Do u require wireless, if so what speed, 802.11n is the latest but these are expensive
- What speed router do you require, 100Mbps or 1Gbps? There are some gigabit routers out there (very expensive) but few gigabit router/modems ... even more expensive
- What features do you need in the modem/router? DHCP, Firewall, etc

Rather focus on what you need, then look for modems that provide that.

I have a 7300G and its fine for typical home use. The wireless however is a bit on the slow side, but fine if your not downloading via the wireless.

I didn't buy it, but we did get the run-around.
They acknowledged that the router was still
under guarantee, but finding out where to
take it was impossible. D-LINK sent us to
the distributors who sent us back to D_LINK.
D-LINK made promises about finding out what
to do with the things and some promises to
replace it (which they didn't) and then the rep
went on holiday and we never heard from him
again. We logged the problem with D-LINK via
their website and after, like, weeks, a guy
responded with some wishy-washy reply about
contacting the distributor again because it
"might be a grey import". We wrote back
again and they never responded at all.

As I said - in effect, no support from D-LINK.

What was also interesting was that the first
thing D-LINK blame is the power supply. We
knew it wasn't that because we tested it.
The first thing they tell you is the power
supply is often faulty, but is not covered
under the warranty.

Yes, and wait for it ....
The replacement cost of the power supply
doesn't make it worthwhile to replace.

So you end up having to buy a new one.

Of course, the 'new one' won't be a
D-LINK!

I didn't buy it...

Then whats the problem? :)

Na, that's why I only deal with reputable, "good service" distributors - it's one thing to get a product a little bit cheaper, but a different ballgame when something goes wrong.
In my experience, the "more expensive" distributors spend that extra money wisely - on their after-sales service!

All that means is that I can provide my clients with better service in the long run - which includes swapping out a D-Link within hours if necessary.

Netgear DGN 2000. Supports ADSL2+, and 802.11n (up to 300mbps wireless). Works great for my home connection, and have set it up for several small businesses as well. The Web Interface to administer the device is pretty straight-forward, with a help section on every page, which covers almost all aspects of administering the device. Also, if you ever get tired of the Netgear firmware, you can load custom firmware on it, such as that from DGTeam. Haven't had any major issues with Netgear devices as yet.

PC International is selling it for R967 incl. VAT. A bit pricier than other options out there, but well worth it in my opinion. I'm sure you can find it somewhere in CT for a similar, if not cheaper, price.

The problem is clear.

D_Link offers a lifetime warranty
> New for broken
But when you try to claim it, they
don't want to know.
