ADSL 640kb upstream?

My guess would be photonman reply: DSLAM doesnt support 640

My 2nd guess would be that even when plugging straight into the DSLAM, 8mbps is REALLY pushing ADSL that even then the SNR is only 10 at that speed. That's why they created ADSL2+ that goes up to 24mbps

br34k: Thank you for sharing. My upstream figures are SNR: 14dB, Att: 12dB (downstream SNR is 25dB, Att is 19dB). Wonder why I can't get 640kbps (no, I'm not bitching and moaning, just wondering)!

Eish @ photonman's 960Kbps upstream! Is your line stable at only 10dB SNR?

here's my line status: (photonman had no luck with mine)

down up

Rate (Kbps): 4096 384
SNR Margin (dB): 30.2 12.0
Attenuation (dB): 12.0 9.5
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 12064 1228

(d-link dsl-2500u)

lol, you guys all know, that photonman by having our telephone number knows like almost everything, our names, street address, banking details.... lol... and we all seem to trust him :)

that means he can trace my adsl line right to my laptop to find out why it wont sync properly at anything above 1024k.... so come on over, i've got some cold beers in the fridge for when u got it fixed :)

hi there will the old telkom usb modem be able to handle download speeds of 4000kbs?

Sastri Munsamy, khetan and fridge are also sorted

Thanks dude, really, really appreciate it - is it possible to re-do though, because line was changed from 4mb to 3mb, seems MUCH more stable. Lady who dialled it down couldn't figure out how to get 640kbps up.

Thanks in advance (again).

curVv it looks like your upstream noise levels are horrible.. hence the reason it cant be done? or the DSLAM just wont allow it...

does anyone know if ADSL2+ is releasing with the 8 meg line upgrade?
if it doesnt then most of us are screwed with our bad SNR's :(

sitting at 9.5db downstream SNR... and its 4-5db snr per 1mbps... therefore... yeah...
and from experiance anything close or under 6db = desync/disconnection.

how is curVv's upstream noise levels horrible? looks absolutely fine to me, and no they are not releasing ADSL2+ with the 8Mbps upgrade

EDIT: hope i don't loose my 640 up when telkom upgrades everyone to 512 up, photonman?

Not too sure how accurate those readings were coz I read on some intl forum that some D-Link routers sometimes report attenuation incorrectly, dunno if this is true?

I'm using D-Link DSL-2500U..

first of all, you lose 4-5db snr per 1mbps br3ak... he has a SNR downstream of 30db synced at 4 meg, and a SNR of 12db upstream at 384kbps.... which means his snr downstream at 384kpbs would be retardedly good.... so just compared with his downstream which is at 4 meg...
its a bad upstream SNR.. full stop.

oh and Telkom are making a huge mistake if they dont release ADSL2+ with the 8 meg upgrade.... 3/4's of jhb's lines are screwed.. you will have a select lucky few who actually sync at 8.. trust me.

Changed the following:

DeFirence
khetan
Masu
sjgreyling
PDH
albert123
Juggy ( 1 line was changed, the other line won't allow it)

Jodash, sorry the dslam won't allow it :(

Titanium, synchs at 1728bkbps only
Stealthza, the dslam won't allow it either :(

Sorry, InsaniacZA, I still don't buy it ;)

I'm not saying I know everything or I have seen everything (or everyone's line stats), but I have yet to see any line stats that indicate the upstream SNR being as strong as the downstream (have you?). I don't know why, maybe it's just like that with DSL, but I don't think you can compare 30dB, an excellent SNR for downstream, to something that should be attainable/expected for upstream. It is asymmetrical digital subscriber line after all :P And, it is Telkom's lines after all

i know all that useless info, BUT wrong about the upstream SNR. my upstream SNR was 13.5 at 384k, at 640k it is 13, his is 12 at 384k, so I can't see how that is bad, unless mine is bad as well? lol.

upstream SNR is much lower than downstream, that is why you can get up to 8mbps downstream but only about 960kbps upstream

they wont do adsl2+ at the same time, otherwise they would've offered a higher package. most people will most likely be syncing at around 6mbps.. besides upgrading their WHOLE adsl infrastructure to ADSL2+ will take a liiiiiitttle while longer than 1 and a bit months

Thanks Photonman, much appreciated. That'd be work still on the slower speed.

DownStream Connection Speed 4096 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 512 kbps

Was holding thumbs for 640 but I'm not complaining :D

Thank you so much photonman, i only wish more telkom employees were like you!

The following were changed:
legolasza

:D Thanks Photonman, the most I ever get at home was 1MB due to my distance from exchange, hence the bad attenuation etc.

Downstream 1696 kbps
Upstream 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.1 db 8.0 db

Thanks again, you made my day.
