So it seems my other ADSL thread is a dead end, 145 views and not a single answer... :erm:

Anyway, I just want to find out how long it usually takes to activate the ADSL on a telephone line.

I ordered my ADSL line through Afrihost, as they are my preferred ISP, but they have informed me that it can take up to 30 days!!!

How is this possible? Surely it shouldn't take this long.

Cheers

Can definitely, depends entirely if Telkom have even had ADSL on that exchange,if not they have to send a techy to go there and install it basically - which can be a pain

It's Telkom. 30 days would be a good guess, but damn sometimes they take even longer. Afrihost will push them as hard as they can but at the end of the day Telkom is Telkom.

The tenants in the flat before us had ADSL, so it should be available on the exchange. They must only flip the switch...or whatever it is they then do.

Unless Telkom re-allocated that port, then they have to send someone out ;)

Your mileage may vary

It's your lucky day. This is an answer :wtf:

There's best case: your line was previously used for ADSL, and the equipment is connected, and just needs to be enabled. That can be quick. It can also take 30 days for no particular reason.

There's worst case: the 128 port DSL thing in your exchange has run out of ports, so they must put another one in, provision cables from your exchange, and actually send someone out to connect the thing to your line.

And then there's the worst case: everything is in place, but nothing can be done for reasons that are impossible to find out.

So all I can do is switch on my router, check if the line syncs, when it doesn't I switch it off again, go lie on my bed and cry myself to sleep.

Repeat everyday

I waited 7 days for Telkom to "flip that switch" after the hardware installation was done. And you are supposed to get an SMS when they do activate the line with your login credentials.

I already have my uncapped account details courtesy of Afrihost. So I am literally just waiting for Telkom to flip the switch.

Alas, it seems that I will have to be patient before I can experience pure internet joy...

To give you some idea. I ordered DSL through Afrihost on the 21st Dec 2013 and it became active on the 3rd Jan 2014. I was not informed at any stage during this process as to when my line would be active - other than the usual "up to 30 days". I pretty much had to check my router on a daily basis to see if it was syncing.

Apparently I'm connected to one of the new MSANs which according to the Telkom techie, simply requires a software configuration change to enable DSL - so why it took so long to enable, only Telkom knows. If Telkom have any plans to improve their service, this would be a great place to start.

Requested DSL from Telkom on 30-Dec-13, told me 21 working days (Wendywood, JNB). Techie called on 03-Jan-14 to confirm if 07-Jan-14 would be a suitable installation date. Came yesterday and sorted it out in 20 minutes!

So, for some random reason Telkom flipped the switch an hour or so ago, but I am really not complaining.

I have ADSL!!!!

Did a quick speedtest and the result is not too bad:

Ping: 13ms, Download: 1.71 Mbps, Upload:0.42 Mbps

This is to the Rosebank Telkom (SAIX) server.

Will do some comprehensive test over the weekend and in the coming week to determine the performance during business hours.

Just for information THERE IS NO SWITCH that gets flipped to activate ADSL , a jumper has to be physically run in the exchange

Ok, good to know for future use.

Just as an aside, what is typical ping, down- and up speeds on a 2 Mbps line?

Sorry guys for hijacking this thread. I have no idea where to go anymore. Can someone please help me with my Telkom adsl self install? im having problems even though everything is connected in the routers menu... Axxess Is my ISP. Phoned them last night and they say I am logged in but I simply cant access the internet . I tried pinging google but request timed out is all I got. Please help anybody:confused:

Did you phone telkom or use the website to activate your ADSL line with telkom? I seem to remember that being a requirement with self-install

To the OP- this is definitely a Telkom thing. Afrihost will send the request through (this should appear on ClientZone) but until Telkom do their thing, you will have to wait. I'm in the same boat.

Tried phoning them but to no avail, I simply can't get through , went to the nearest Telkom shop and they said ill have to phone them. I cant seem to access their site aswell, i'm using www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl ,is this correct ? Should I rather try using the guest@telkomadsl as the username and "guest" as the password? this is so frustrating because it shouldn't be this hard...

Right site, use the Telkom guest account, should be the only site that can load :)
