ADSL ADVICE NEEDED

Download speed will be your main advantage.

As for the Chilli - Wait until they have their bugs ironed out if you are set on that.
I just ditched my test account with them because i simply could not handle 5-10 KB/s downloads on single threaded downloads any more.
(Kind of defeats the object of a 4MB/s line doesn't it?)

I just signed up for an additional account with Afrihost and the whole thing was set up and running in under 5 minutes.

The new year should hopefully bring us more affordable 4MB/s uncapped packages in one form or another.

I think I'm gonna wait a few months until better packages comes out when we get 1Mb/s download speeds for a cheaper price.

Oops... I deleted this post.

Hi, my fellow myBB fans! Can anyone give me some advice on a decision I will be making in the near future.

I am planning to quit my current Vodacom 3G modem, primarily because of it costing R1049 per month for just 5 gigs. So I am considering doing the following:

1) Get a 4 megabit line from Telkom. (R413)
2) Buy Screamer's 384k uncapped ADSL offering for movie and game downloads. (R399)
3) Buy a 3 gig account from Afrihost for browsing. (R87)

Do you think that that will work? Also, is Afrihost or Screamer good ISPs?
Feel free to post :wtf:/:sick: advice.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. I don't think Screamer is a good idea.

Thanks for everyone's advice.
I have decided to take SAOL's Simply Uncapped offering in two months if there didn't come anything better out by then.

Well while there is a thread on this I thought I would throw in my new years conundrum. Do I go with one of the cheap uncapped 384 options eg SAOL at R499 or do I get 10-15 gigs with afrihost or MyIsp and upgrade from a 512 to a 4096 line.

It depends on what you want. You can download about 100gigs with uncapped 384 but browsing is a pain (and obviously downloads are slower). 4meg will be better if there isn't too much you want/need to download.

I would not be signing any "term" contracts right now. Too much is expected to happen in the next few months and I don't want to be bound by any contract!

Moggie is right. SAOL requires your line to be with them. Considering you will have the 4meg line, watch the DigiChilli threads closely. Their service is far from perfect right now but it is burstable. I've heard of some guys (on 256kb/s) getting around 300KB/s. If the network improves, you should go with them:)

Watch those threads carefully.

I have a 4MB/s line and have been getting 7-10kB/s on single threaded downloads on a test account with DigiChilli.

Go with SAOL uncapped rather, but on a 4MB/s line you are wasting your time with a 256kbps/384kbps connection.

EDIT : I just signed with Afrihost as a second ISP and am over the moon thus far.

I would probably download 3-4 albums and a couple of tv shows or movies. Currently we do about 2-3 gigs/ month just with browsing, no ps3 online and not alot of downloading.

If I knew I had no cap I could do much much more, my dad didn't want to spend more than R300 on data and I'm not sure about the line upgrade.

Do you think a big afrihost or MyIsp account will do as a stop gap until the new cables land and seacom is fully lit up? Cantthink of anything else to ask now

A lot has been hinted on this forum about line speed upgrades. Apparently around March or so 384 is gonna be upgraded to 1meg. 4meg will become 8meg (assuming your exchange supports it). I personally don't wanna be stuck on 256 when I have a much faster line.

My plan is to upgrade to 8meg (gonna have to call out techies, long story:rolleyes:) then get Axxess uncapped express and a few gigs from Afrihost. Assuming the price for 8meg is the same as 4meg I should just be able to afford it but you never know.

Right now I'm switching between Telkom (3+20), Web Africa (0+30) and Afrihost (1+0) on 384. It works well as I use about 40gigs locally and most of my international.

It all depends on what you want to do.:)
