Hi Guys,

I am hoping someone can offer some sound advice, since dealing with Telkom staff is a bit like banging your head against a brick wall.

I left South Africa 11 months ago and I am returning within the next 3 weeks. I am a little out of touch on the current options and would greatly value some feedback.

I have an existing Telkom ADSL line at my property in SA. The line has an existing home 384 account and I want to upgrade to a 1 meg account BUT…. I also need to find a way to enable 30 to 40 gigs of transfer a month.

I have read and heard that Telkom internet (retail division) is not hard or soft capping accounts, is this true, and if so, are they billing at all for the additional data transfer.

Additionally if anyone has some work around or advice on the best route to go with a costs I would greatly appreciate all the input.

if in your budget it might be feasable to get an uncapped account, unfortunatly i really dunno the prices of them tho, MRBeep, u got any offerings?
Good luck!

Yeah i agree with Silent_Bob.

The adsl scene in sa is a bit dodgy atm!

if you really have to go with the 1024 line,(imo the 384 is still the best value for money/prefomance option!)getting 30 – 40 gig may prove a bit costly.

I think an IS uncapped account is in the region of R1500pm that includes a cisco router, but they block p2p traffic on a hardware level.

So depending on what you want type of data you want to "Move" ;) with the mentioned 30-40gb, the uncapped offering from IS is very viable.

Telkom ADSL

I want to chew off my own arm when I hear this cr@p, it really gets to me, but thanks for the input guys. Anyone have any idea on the Telkom Accounts with regards to whether or not they are capping etc.

Most ISP's offering with own Radius servers are capping. Every gig costs them money! Currently Telkom accounts can get away with not being capped, for holong I dont know.
ISP's selling IS accounts offer 30 gig local traffic additional.
IS offers Uncapped (512k) @ 1350, Uncapped (1meg) @ R2900, unfortunately with their quick growth the Uncapped seems to be extremely slow.
Datapro offers uncapped 512k and 1m at similar prices.

This is indeed usefull information, my next and last question is. If a Telkom Account uses say 20 Gigs, does telkom bill for the additional 17 Gigs?

No, because Telkom says that it is a 3GB account. If the account goes over 3GB then it is not the fault of the user, but Telkom allowing it to happen.
