ADSL / alarm dialer

I have a typical alarm with radio then dialup backup. Since installing ADSL my dialup is not communicating with the alarm provider in spite of a POTS filter attached to the dialup cable.

I have a single telephone line into my residence with two jacks. The ADSL works well, with POTS filters so do my telephones. When I telephone the alarm dialup number I hear clear digital signals. When I disconnect the dialup line from the jack, the alarm panel gives me a phone line lost signal. The same happens if I connect the dialup line + filter to either of the jacks with nothing else connected.

The alarm technician says the line is not 'clean', Telkom have come, checked and say it is. My belief is that given the good ADSL and telephone working plus the phone line lost signal at the alarm, surely the alarm dialer is the problem.

How can this be sorted out?

How is the alarm dialer physically connected with your line? Is it connected after a pots filter?(Correct under normal conditions -unless filter is faulty).....Is it possible the it is connected behind 2 pots filters....this would warp any analogue signals (error report from alarm company)

Temporarily unplug the ADSL router or modem. There should be far less data noise on your line allowing your alarm dialup to get through sucsessfully. Does this work?

Although you can hear the alarm data online, my gut feel is that there is a wiring issue here.

The alarm cable goes to a POTS filter then to the jack. I've tried disconnecting everything else to have just the alarm cable / POTS filter in the jack with no improvement. I've also tried another POTS filter - no luck.

My dial-up modem for faxing from the computer works fine.

Any suggestions on the possible wiring issue? The alarm cable is wired to the two outer pins of a Protea plug that goes into a Protea female RJ11 combo that goes into the POTS filter then the jack.

hmmm....I can only suggest that somthing is up with the Alarm unit. It might have been "spiked" when the ADSL was installed.

If you have a technical flair you might want to try the following (otherwise leave it to the Alarm Techs):

1) With a volt meter measure the voltage across those outer pins of the jack point (should be around 50-60v with the telephone line inactive)...now check it at the Alarms boxes telephone line input....should be consistent)

2) Do a hard reset of the alarm system....including removing the backup battery.....make sure this is ok with the alarm people as it might void waranties etc.

The fact that your fax and dial up are ok leads me to this conclusion

Thanks I'll get the alarm people in and see if I can get them to check the alarm. They did not seem keen previously. I'll keep you informed.
