Hi,

What would you suggest is the best alternative for ADSL at the moment. Here is my story:

I had a great 6mb line, sold my house and moved into a rental property while I am building a new home. Applied for an ADSL line in early December, and then was told that there is no ports available on the exchange.

I decided to get a 3G router, Cell C modem, and that should do the trick, but damn, the thing is terrible, I have more connectivity problems than when I had a 56K modem in 1996, and it's DAMN expensive.

I know telkom could take anything from 1 day to 1 decade to upgrade the exchange, so I am looking for alternatives.

Options I suppose is Satellite broadband, or Neotel, iBurst have near to no coverage in the area.

I suppose with any type of wireless tech, you will have interruptions when the wind blows a bit, but what would you say is the best options?

Thanks
Jaco Roux

Dependant on where you live, wireless is not a bad idea. Go to WAPA home page www.wapa.org.za. There is a coverage page that will send a mail to all WAPA members and they will contact you. If you are scared of wireless any reputable wireless provider ( i would prever a WAPA member ) would give a demo so you could decide if it what you want. :)

Thanks for the tip. I have completed the form, and hoping for the best

The other "Devil" ........

You say you cannot get decent 3G and other wireless type solutions are not optimal ?
Seeing as every exchange is pretty much a Telkom one you a bit snookered when it comes to a wired solution.
Although ADSL ports may not be available -- other stuff might be ?
You could try Telkom Business -- give them a ring and make an appointment to see a Business Account manager
No success no harm
Nothing ventured -- Nothing gained

Jaco have you thought of the 8ta 10gb promo,or is there no 8ta reception in your area?

Btw dont look at the 8ta maps legend for coverage its outdated,my area still shows no covergae yet I'm using the promo here for over a year now with speeds around 2,5mpbs and 3 bars of signal and its been very reliable for me besides a small slow patch last months but that seems to be fine now.

Get an actual 8ta only data pre paid card and test it in your area to see if its an option.
Dont get the one that roams on mtn,ask them for the "promo prepaid sim card"

I did tests with all the major cell providers, Cell C gave me the best reception and speed, but it was so full of crap, a bit of wind, and disconnect.

They installed a wireless solution at my house yesterday, and so far I am happy. For normal browsing it works great, latency seems very low, but the speed is up and down all the time. I suppose there is a lot of variables, but it's a LOT better than 3G.

It is still a lot more money than ADSL. I had to pay R2200 for the hardware and install, and R900 a month for 15Gb. Speedtests show a max of 20Mbps and a min of 5Mbps and it average about 10Mbps. Still think ADSL is a stable solution, but this will work in the mean time..

Thanks for all the tips so far
