I have a 2mg adsl service and a cordless telephone connected to the line. I get 1.1mbs on the line with the phone connected.
When the phone is disconnected I get 1.6 - 1.8mbs.
Does the telephone system take up 400-600 kbs?
Is there a telephone system that does not take up this much bandwidth when not in use?
Thank you for any responses.

Is it a Telkom approved phone? Trust me ,that is a very important factor.

Yes it is a telkom /Icsa approved phone and yes its connected via a pots filted.

Sounds like the phone is causing noise on the line. I had a telkom tech at my house just a week or so ago, he suggested we replace two of the devices, but stay away from cordless devices.

I had a similar situation with a standard desktop 'phone: when the 'phone was plugged in the SNR dropped considerably.

The solution was to replace the unit.

Yep, to be 100% safe, replace both the handset and the filter regularly. This lightning and power surges in SA make havoc of our equipment. :(

Are you using Wifi? If yes its because both wifi and the cordless phone are using the 2.4gHz spectrum and causing slow downs.

I've been using cordless phones for years through 4Mbps now 10Mbps on my ADSL line and never noticed them impacting download speed.

The cordless unit was connected via an old Telkom installed extension.I have bypassed the extension and the Adsl speed is now at 1.4mbs.Looks like there is a fault on the extension.
Thanks for the tips.

Interesting info .. thanks. Although we use a direct Ethernet connection between our wireless ADSL Mecer router and 1 x PC, plus 1 x laptop, our mobile devices (2 x android tablets, plus 2 x android phones) connect via WiFi to that same router.

I get frequent drops in ADSL and WiFi signal (but landine is working), which a router-reboot usually resolves. I now wonder if the 2.4gHz issue could contribute to the drops. We also have Telkom cordless handsets in 3 rooms of the house (study - where my wireless router is, plus kitchen, plus bedroom.

I stand to be corrected but believe that ICASA approved cordless phones conform to the DECT standard and operate on 1.9gHz.

Can someone more knowledgeable please comment ...
