I'm currently on 10Mbps ADSL and it syncs at the full speed, is really stable, runs well.

But it looks like I may be able to upgrade to 20Mbps VDSL.

I'm a bit nervous about "fixin what aint broken" and ending up with problems, but I probably won't be able to resist and upgrade.

If my line is upgraded to 20Mbps VDSL, could I still carry on using my current ADSL modem and sync at 10Mbps as I do at the moment? And the 20Mbps VDSL would only work when I use the VDSL modem? Can I switch between the two randomly?

Thanks!

The answer to both questions is yes.

You can continue using your ADSL modem at 10mb
You will only get the faster speed by using a VDSL modem.

Cannot you borrow one for a week, to see if it does work? There have been many conflicting stories and tales on here and I don't know whether it is Telkom problem or user problem

That question is sort of a conundrum right now.

Some people are reporting that they can get 20Mbps on ADSL2+ while other are only getting synced at ~15Mbps for a while then their internet breaks (even with a VDSL modem).

The correct answer is no though, 20Mbps VDSL will not work at all on a normal ADSL modem. If however you can get 20Mbps on ADSL2+ then you can keep your existing modem, you just won't get the full 2Mbps upload sync (only 1Mbps).

Ok, I didn't realise Telkom had 20Mbps ADSL... Now I'm even more confused :wtf:

So if I got the following email from Telkom:

****
Your speed max on exchange is Maximum Exchange Speed
20480
Current Synchronization Speed
10240

VDSL speed options are:
VDSL 40 MBPS R795.00 per month
VDSL 20 MBPS R540.00 per month
****

Does that mean I would still sign up for VDSL 20 Mbps? Or how would I get ADSL 20 Mbps?

yes Telkom is running 20mbps ADSL 2+ , my office is running on it fine.

difference is the upload.
Price is same. Telkom will still charge you for vdsl line. i think it more over bandwidth so I have 20mbps line and will pay for that.

and yes can use existing modem, so long adsl2+ compatible

From someone who had a horrible VDSL experience I can not recommend doing it now.

1: Neither Telkom support or your ISP support really have the knowledge to support VDSL.
2: The VDSL hardware available at the moment is not great.
3: You might have an OK upgrade but a LOT of people have not, chances are that you will have some downtime.

If you can get an ADSL2 upgrade to 20 meg then that would probably be the best option (at the moment)
