I have a customer who's ADSL I have set up and he has endless problems browsing any international sites. His ISP is Xsinet and their upstream ISP is Internet Solutions. If you do a ping to www.webmail.co.za the time is +/_ 52ms but if you ping www.hotmail.com it is 1372ms and the sites does not open fully. We have now been in contact with all the role players and with no success. Can someone please give me advice as to what I can do going forward as the customer are paying for a service that he is not able to use.

Thanx

Dirk:confused:

C:\Documents and Settings\****>ping www.hotmail.com

Maybe post pings to other international sites that are causing problems. I am on Uunet and, as you can see, I am getting WORSE pings to hotmail, and, believe me, at 08h00 on boxing day, my adsl link is FLYING!

Edit PS Peter_J thinks hotmail is running on that old 286 in the corner!

Anywas - mebbe you should tell IS to stick their product somewhere, and get a WebAfrica/AYCE account.

Have your customer Download Drtcp , small file http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.zip

Read this http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6266

Check MTU settings by doing this:
Go to Start/ Programs/ MSDOS-PROMPT, and type....

ping -f -l 1472 www.dslreports.com

(That is a dash-ell not a dash-one. Also note the spaces in-between the sections) Press Enter. Then reduce 1472 by 10 until you no longer get the "packet needs to be fragmented" error message. Then increase by 1 until you are 1 less from getting "packet need to be fragmented" message again.

Add 28 more to this (since you specified ping packet size, not including IP/ICMP header of 28 bytes) And this is your MaxMTU.

Note:If you can ping through with the number at 1472, you are done! Stop right there. Add 28 and your MaxMTU is 1500.

Hope that helps
