Hello fellow broadband fundi's,

Can someone please suggest the best service provider and best data line. I need to get a line that will allow me a speed of 5mbps. I will be utilising this for teaching online and their specifications call for a good data line.

I'm not too aufait with this techno savvy stuff and really have limited knowledge.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

Do you currently have a Telkom landline?

Which town/city?

Also look at certain wireless solutions. My foster son does this (online training) from the garden cottage using a Telkom Mobile connection.

Hello,

Thank you for responding.

I do currently have an adsl line at home with Telkom. But it's not fast enough for their specifications. Something to do with packets that were getting lost or something ?!?

I'm based in Durban, Overport.

Unfortunately because I will be teaching international students, the company will not allow a wireless connection. It can only be through an adsl connection, cable or fibre optic. So I have to have a cable running to my laptop.

My one also works for an international company (paid in Euros) and only has international students.

Post your router stats here (DL/UL, SNR, etc.). If you have WinMTR installed, run it for a while and post stats here as well.

It's possible that your line is faulty and Telkom needs to fix it. Overport has a massive exchange so only distance should be a barrier to you getting better speeds.

Oh that's wonderful :)

It seems like a lucrative method to earn some rands.

I did call Telkom last year sometime querying this and they weren't the most helpful and kept telling me they resetting the line on their side. I will run the data speed log and post Tom as I'm not at home. Thank you

I have a friend doing the same thing and he uses Telkom uncapped LTE.

I looked here http://www.telkom.co.za/coverage/ and Overport looks fully covered by LTE.

Speeds on LTE can go up to 100mb/s so it will suit you needs and then some.

Sounds to me like you need 5mbps UP if you're going to be teaching?

No ADSL line in SA will give you that. LTE or fibre are your only options.

Nah, it's DL.

To "pass" the test my youngster used my 10Mbps old work ADSL line. After that he used 3G on Telkom Mobile and not had any issues.

I stand corrected :)
