ADSL comming on Friday - Some Q's that need A's ;)

Hey Guys,

Telskum are supposed to come this comming friday to install my adsl line.
Now they asked if i would like one of their modems, i kindly smirked and said no.
NOW! here come the Questions, hehe.

I have read around the Forum and see that the recommended brands are Billion and NetGear. Please advise which one is the 'better' or recomended. Also, Where i can get them? I see there is http://soholink.co.za . are their prices reasonable? and which Modem/Router should i get. I will be connecting more then one computer so i will need a router.

One more thing, does anyone know if Axxess ISP's pings are comapareble to other ISP's in counterstrike on sgs?

Axxess uses SAIX bandwidth so the ping will be the same.

I have a Billion 743GE which is brilliant imo. I've never had a problem with connecting the 2 other computers.
 
what telkom say and do are 2 completely different things, you should probably expect your adsl intalled next month some time.

rburley - get the cheapest you can find, because as far as I have seen, there's not a great deal of difference. People may rave about a routers firmware, but the bottom line is you can't beat a PC based firewall like IPCop or Smoothwall in terms of configuration options, security, frequent updates etc.

It depends how much of a geek you are to be honest. If your the kinda guy that may decide to setup your own home webserver via your ADSL connection, with most modem routers, that is difficult.

I got a planet router with really decent firmware in terms of options, but it wasn't even close to as flexible as what I was used to - dialup via smoothwall - so I put the damn thing in bridged mode and ran first a smoothwall box and now I'm running IPCop and when I need to, run my home webserver via dyndns.

bottom line - don't bother with USB modems - go directly for an ethernet one, don't even think about getting USB. If you spend more than R500, your wasting your money.

But that's my 10cents - other people will have other ideas, sup to you.

Just wondering, are there any routers out there, that transmit a wirless transmision, and have the ability to be connected by network cables?

Also, if this is possible to get - what sort of radius do you get?

All wireless ADSL router does that, eg. NetGear DG834G, Billion 7402G etc, They've got 4ports for cable connection and WiFi (802.11g/54M). If you want connect more than 4pcs, you can attach a 5/8/16ports switch to router. one router can support 254 client PCs in theory, but one 512K ADSL for 10 is still ok depends your application.

for WiFi range, is very from your environment, normally 100m for open space. You can extend it by replacing the antenna

I am hard wired into one of the 4 ports on my Netgear DG834G.
Its also wireless and has a firewall etc. etc. see links below.

It used to fall over regularly, needing a power reset until upgraded
to firmware V1.05.00, now its rock solid!

I play a lot of counterstrike & now BF2 which it seems to handle very well.

BTW did u go with Axxess??????? tell me what you think, I like the 5GIG account offering.
