For the first time ever we are as a family discussing going the adsl route instead of portable date packages etc.

This is being brought about by the fact that my sister will probably start working from home soon, and that three of us in the household are nearing the end of our individual internet packages.

We do have an existing landline at home. so would just need to add the adsl to this

I need advice... sound sane logical advice about adsl and comparisoms about what is on offer from the different companies such as Telkom and mweb etc etc.

I have been browsing online and find it all quite confusing, which is why I need help for clarity's sake because if you think I am a layman, you should meet my family ... :)

  1. Which service provider offers the best all round service
  2. What should be the minimum speed we should look at for a small home office use and 2 other casual users
  3. what sort of package should we be looking at ? I know telkom offers the "closer" which is a voice and data package, but I think that is primarily for people who do not have existing lines
  4. Does being online affect the voice / telephone call usage at all
  5. Regarding the above, this applies to being able to send faxes as well
  6. How does the wireless router system work / come into play so that multiple users can go online at one time
  7. do you get charged per number of users
  8. is the installation and cost of the router included with teh package

And then one has to take into consideration capped or uncapped, shaped or unshaped etc . I know that unshaped is used more by gamers etc which we are not , but it is as said all very confusing.

Would appreciate as said in the beginning some sane logical advice puuullleeeeze

Mweb. Can't go wrong. Best overall service, great customer support, great speed and great price (especially uncapped)

I would suggest getting a 1Mbps line from telkom, and then PMIng MWEB Guy and see if he can organize a test account for you. That would give you a good idea of what you could expect.

Telkom closer: stay away.

Your line will NOT be affected as long as you install POTS filters, which are dirt cheap and usually come with your router.

I really can't explain the whole router thing right now, but its pretty easy to learn your way around.
