ADSL Connection dropping

I have had problems with disconnects ever since December 2002. In three months before that, it hardly ever happened. Typically, these start at about 7pm and go on until midnight, sometimes as many as 30 per evening. At other times of day, I hardly ever have a problem. Several visits by Telkom, including being allocated a different connection to the Sunninghill DSLAM, have not eliminated the problem.

I am now assuming that it might be the modem and am considering replacing the original Telkom one (Alcatel SpeedTouch USB) with the entry-level D-Link 200i USB modem.

Do any members have advice or opinions regarding whether this equipment is a wise choice? Not to mention any ideas why my disconnect problems exhibit such a strange pattern?

many thanks,

Man I am getting frustrated with this i got a DM602 Netgear modem, and i am getting disconnected every 5 minutes , i have now finely discovered that its my Attenuation which was very high on the Upstream which was 64 , and i keep being disconnected , amazingly enough my downstream was 32 which the telkom guys said was amazingly high . but trust me i would sacrifice some of my downloading speed to get the upload thing going :( apparently the telkom guy says nothing can be done to fix it ,(anybody any ideas)
Apparently if I get another router it will work fine which router/modem should I get , if that will help .
please email me [email protected]

Hi Alex, I had the DM602 when all my problems occurred, I've now got the DG814 and no problems since then - hope this helps

But i wounder why this modem fails like this it seems to be a good quality modem , and yet it doesnt work properly ,and nothing helps there must be something out there i sent netgear a complaighnt but they havent reasponded

IMHO, Telkom are streamlining the lines for use only with their routers - aw gee, guess we need to buy a Telkom Router if the others don't work, damn....... more revenue for telkom (yuk spit!!!)

this is getting on my nerves i mean is this planned by telkom or summing :( i mean come on , i was useing a DM602 which was constently disscoencting me , i sent it back and borrowed a Pots telkom router for a while form a telkom techi , and just today i got my D-link 500G router deliverd and it started again what the hell does this mean does it mean i have to use telkom products

my previous ade 3000 kicked the bucket and the guys at cables replaced it with a new one. first few days are fine, then it starts losing signal more frequently.

lost signal 18 times in last hour.
I don't know what to do anymore.

I need to leave this country.

PS. What are CRC errors? I'm getting lots of those too

(see my previous post of 10 October)

It looks like I'm not the only person with frequent disconnect problems. Like others, Telkom techs have carried out tests and not identified the problem.

I have not yet changed modems but I have run a log on my firewall which seems to show that disconnects happen when certain probes are launched at my machine. The disconnect, however, is not being initiated by my software so maybe it is happening at Telkom's side.

Only other point of interest is that, since the North went back on winter time, the disconnects are typically happening an hour later than before, which strengthens my "conspiracy theory" that it has something to do with hackers scanning for open ports.

I am running both Win XP and Norton firewalls but any security advice would be appreciated.

If you have an unpatched Telkom modem a probe on the Telnet port will give it problems. You can test by doing a Telnet [your modem IP] from a command prompt to see what happens.

Telkom does renew IP's after 24 hours. That is why you will have to reconnect once a day...

Cheers

<br />Telkom supply Marconi ADSL routers.

The update you are looking for is available from a link on this page:

http://www.m-newera.co.za/product5-d.htm

I updated this morning so I'm interested to see if it solves the problem, I also seemed to lose my connection every 24 hours or so. The router didn't initialize properly after releasing it's IP.

Well, you can download it there. This is the official update for the Telkom Pots Routers, so I'd suggest using this one instead of something for a router that just looks the same.

Thanks, a Telnet open command does seem to give hassles. Is there any chance you could tell me how to "patch" my Alcatel USB to prevent this? I would rather chew razor blades than try to get this information from the DSL help line.

Thanks to Andre!

As expected, no results for Alcatel patches or support advice from ADSL help line BUT I did find a driver upgrade on the Alcatel site which seems to have greatly improved performance. Now the acid test is to see if it stays connected during port 23 probes.

Ok, I assumed you had the "Marconi" modem from Telkom, which would lock up when you accessed the Telnet port.

Don't bother getting a Telkom modem.
I goet one from them. Ethernet modem.
I disconnect every night. Once it disconnects everything turns to ****. You can not reconnect. I have to shutdown all the pc connected to the hub, unplug the modem, reset it manually, plug everything back in, boot up the systems again and then connect. This last night only lasted for 5 min and then got disconnected again. The funny thing is that once you diconnect the modem "Freezes" you can not even ping it. To thus far the help desc at telkom has not helped at all and I am still waiting for the tech to show up.

The connection I use is a usb modem to PC with ICS,

Over weekends and after hours I hardly ever disconnect,
but during business hours I get disconnected quite often -
today it has disconnected about 10-15 times already[?]

THis connectiton dropeing is about , the *** lines we have in south africa whch telkom dont care about , the reason teklom modem is able to handle it is couse it was desighned for our *** lines here , and what they did to they modems , i dont know couse its secret information , well thats what D-link tells me

My connection drops every 2 minutes when a storm is up... perhaps rain comes in the box or lines? [?]

OK - this is now seriously driving me insane!! Every 15 mins the modem loses synch and all your web based apps (msn, dc, etc) drop !!!!
[:(!]
Now the argument was that possibly our modems/routers are problematic. I have a Zyxel and was working fine for the first 1 month of my ADSL service. After Sunday SOMETHING happened ... ALL of a sudden I have this cyclic synch loses. [:(!]

Whatever Telkom has done, is getting WORSE and needs to be UNDONE!!!

I have had the same problem with my link. First month was perfect, so I had reservations about blaming the line.

Had techies come out anyway, they did actually pick up a line fault and replaced quite a lot of cabling. They tested it afterwards, and it was fine. Later that night my line started dropping the connection every 18 seconds or so. (I have Marconi ethernet router by the way) I noticed that the line was a lot more stable when I was the only pc on the network, so tried to think of how our network could affect the connection.

Telkom phoned in the morning to check up - transferred me to the adsl expert at the exchange (Hillcrest KZN). He told me to check if I had SVCHOST.exe in my processes list - I did (Although I knew that this was related to a virus, it had never bothered me before). Got rid of the virus (It's called the nachi worm or something) and my line has been great since then. The Worm uses hecktic network resources and keeps the LAN and DSL activity led's constantly flashing. More people should know about this problem - don't know if it has been mentioned here yet. Let me know if this helps anyone out - Cheers.

erm, svchost.exe does not necessarily imply virus/trojan.

taken from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056

The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry to construct a list of services that it needs to load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started.
