ADSL Connection issues

I need some help from the clever people.

My 2mb ADSL is a constant nightmare. Since March I am having constant issues with an unstable connection. The line speed is up and down, and intermittently disconnects (to spite me normally when a download is at 99%). The SNR is below 6 and sometimes in the minus range.

When the line sync is slow, all I do is to phone 10210 , wait for the IVR to answer and put the phone down, then it is magically back to full speed, for a while.

The Telkom Tech’s was at my house at numerous times but the problem doesn't go away. What annoys me is that they got me so far as to replace my modem and phone already, when that clearly wasn't the problem. My neighbor has no such problems on the 4mb line, with the only difference that his line connects one pole further.

Is there any advice? I am at whit’s end with this.

Sounds poor quality copper or may have lots of breaks or joins in the cable.
Leave the phone off the hook when you need to use the internet?

I cant really do that, seeing as I am using the phone from time to time.
I will test it though.

Tell Telkom that they should send someone to test the line properly.

Sometimes its physical damage (lightning). The ports can burn and cause noise on the line after a lightning strike. Even though it works somewhat, can you can make a call, it still needs to be replaced.

Also it could possibly be the line filter (that is comming from the wall socket) but this is rare.

What router do you use ? I had something similar since Telkom did the line speed ugrades a year ago. After a firmware ugrade on my then D-Link router it was resolved.

Hi There,
I would test it with the phone disconnected and the line fliter removed. If it works then the problem is probably the filter. If it doesnt then you have connectivity issues that are completely the responsibility of Telkom. Make sure when you test that there are no other devices or extensions plugged in as well.

Regards

Hi,
The steps I followed so far:
1. POTS filter removed.
2. Phone disconnected.
3. Double checked router firmware to be the latest (I use a TP-Link TD-W8968).
4. Tested with my old router (Planet, not wi-fi).
5. Plugged the router in at a different plug.

I just ran the Afrihost "tweak my line" and stats now:

Current Rate (Kbps) Upstream: 512 Downstream: 2048
Max Rate (Kbps) Upstream: 884 Downstream: 3712
SNR Margin (dB) Upstream: 12 Downstream: 11.5
Line Attenuation (dB) Upstream: 24 Downstream: 46.5

Mybroadband Speedtest Ping 56ms (not good in my view)

So for now its ok.
I will post when it croaks...
