Hi there,

We have an ADSL Router Pots, connected directly to our Gigabyte 108mbps B49G wireless router.

Our whole office experiences sudden drops of connections throughout the day. We can see our skype connection going on and off randomly throughout the day, and others say that we are all always loggin on an off.

Initially when we setup the new router, we had to disable DHCP on the ADSL router as there was a conflict with the DHCP which was enabled on the wireless router.

We have also connected the ADSL router, directly through ethernet cable directly to an ethernet port on the wireless router, and not through the WAN port.

I am not too sure if there is anything suspect with the above, but it would be great to have a stable connection!

Any help, ideas would be grateful.

Thanks in advance.

;)

I recon it's your internet service provider's inability to provide you with a stable international internet connection that's the problem.
Can you access this site when skype stops working ?
Who is your ISP ?

No, all connectivity, email (usa server), msn, skype do not function.

Isp: Internet Solutions

by the way, we go through a 3rdparty provider GAMCO, who go through IS, not too sure if this has anything to do with it...

IS international was down almost the whole day: blame it on your ISP: Internet Solutions

Yup ... your email server in the us and msn [us] and skype [us] will not work while IS is having problems.

See the following thread [ http://myadsl.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=38008 ]- problem seems to be sorted ... well, until the next rainstorm/snowstorm/general bad weather.

IS provide international bandwidth to their ADSL users using sattelite, and if there is bad weather at the sending part or the receiving part, you're goning to have problems.

Our connection drops all day everyday, I really do not believe that it is an ISP thing, maybe a connection setup thing?

Ask your ISP to check if your sessions end with "Port-Errors". Sounds like it. If that is the case, log a fault with the Telkom DSL Helpdesk (0800 375 375).

already had telkom in, they have checked the line.tried another router as well. all is well with everything from their side. we are right next to the Barrack Street exchange as well.

I suspect its a setting on one of my routers..............

It sounds to me like a line fault. One of the first times my line repeatedly dropped was when my telephone cable first ran to the surge protector and then to the modem. The surge protector could be the cause. Take the tele. cable and plug it directly into the dsl modem circumventing the surge protector. Otherwise call another techie in to get another opinion regarding the integrity of the line.

OK - we had the same problem. Eventually diagnosed as a router - server conflict. Swopped out the router for a different brand and it worked (although I suspect the initial router was not set up correctly).

Anyway, if you are technical, try this:

1) Open a DOS prompt - or command line prompt
2) Type ping 168.210.2.2 > ipping.txt (the ip address being IS's DNS server and the redirect is to a text file called ipping.txt).

Now, when the internet "fails", the ping file should also show a drop "request timed out" or "destination could not be reached" etc. (Do expect a few of these, but not a strecth of 10 or more - so one every now and then is not unexpected, and "normal"!

In our case, this DID NOT happen - the ping was 100% (or in fact, 99% because of random time outs). This indicates a DNS problem on the server/ router.

Also, if you look up your public IP, and have access to a remote PC, ping the server from the remote and check those pings.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: We also use IS ADSL.
