Hello everyone,

Im at the end of the road now, i have tried everything i could think of.

I have one of them black Billion whatever 4 port routers from Telkom (i know i know)...
Anyhow I am on a 512 I.S connection, And i have no problem connecting up, surfing, Irc, torrents whatever. The problem that im experiencing is, Once connected, i open up a game(for example Warcraft 3) and as i enter the game, my connection resets and reconnects. If im in the game and it reconnects, if i ALT TAB, the connection Drops.

I have NO firewall running, I have Formated and reinstalled Windows XP PRO, Its not Warcraft thats the problem, because it happens with ANY game that my connection gets reset. I supect the problem being a security issue on XP? Or ???

This problem has only occured 2 days ago, since i formated and reinstalled windows.

I'd appretiate any help please.

Thank you.

If you installed XP sp2 then the firewall is set on by default. rclick network connections ans go to advanced tab on your adsl connector and uncheck the firewall setting

Thanks, but the firewall is 100% off :(

It must be a windows setting?

I've tried another ADSL account, which does the same thing.
I've tried different games, which does the same thing.
So only leaves Windows?

it could be a hardware issue, try organise a mate with a different system to yours and see if the same problem occurs, then it will be the line but i think that that is very unprobrobable and will be software/hardware issues with ur pc, could be the mb is faulty but this prob sound for software orrientated, reload windows, install your drivers, nothing new just the stuff from your cd's. keep your hardware installed to only the things you need, then check firewalls etc, dont install antivirus, then install the game and try, by doing this it can help you with what is causing it, if the games work, then install things 1 by 1 and check everytime if everything is working prob so you can find if there is any software causing this!

Good luck!

Try configuring your Billion ADSL router to do the dialup for you. Then all devices on the router get NATTED.

Swith from Bridge mode to normal PPPoE Dialup - should work.

Back again:( same problem still.

I installed Win SP 2, (now i had sp2 installed before, so i dotn see this as a problem?) , i installed Mirc, i installed all my hardware drivers, and i tried to play the game. And straight away as i go into the game, i get disconnected. I formated the hard drive, reinstalled Win XP pro sp1, and installed drivers. Any suggestions *sob*?:(

Hi Spectre

Have you tried MobileAllOver's advice?

Yep, done that, didnt help, I fiddled with Router settings, set up it as dial up... all failed.

Okay ... this sucks ...

First off ... I am assuming that you've confirmed that the games work in singleplayer mode so it's not a video card issue.

Second off ... I am asuming that your game was reinstalled with legit keys and stuff so it's not an authentification/duplicate cd key issue.

So ...
Because it only happens in games, and games use DirectX to do the communication thing, I'll have to assume that something is wrong with your Direct X installation. [Theory anyways]

No to try to prove it:
Run DXDiag : Start -> Run -> typein : DXDiag -> Ok/Enter to execute.
It'll startup and go bonkers with a progress bar and pretend to be doing something intelligent.
Click on the Network tab - In the Notes - there should be a No Problems found thingy - if there isnt one - reinstall DirectX using the repair option. Your games cd should have a copy on it.
If it does say all is ok, we need to test the DirectX network stuff ...

You should still have DirectX Diag running.
In the Network Tab, click on the Test Directplay button.
Make sure that DirectPlay TCPIP Service proivider is selcted.
Enter 16567 as the port number.
The Create New Session radio button must be selected [called test session].
Click OK.
It will seem to hang for a while as it starts up.
When it starts you will be given the opportunity to send yourself a text message by typing in a message in the textbox next to send and clicking on send.
You will then recieve a message from yourself if all is ok.

Tell us how this goes.

Thank you very much for assisting me, The Games (as soon as i enter them, it drops) i did the DXDIAG test, and i typed a msg and it was succesfull. I dont think its the games problems,as i tried multiple games of mine (Q3,Men of valor, Warcraft 3 etc) all give the same problem. Disc as you enter the game.

The network tab has no problems found...

Any more ideas?

would this cause a problem, i installed Windows XP Pro SP1, after i got a corrupt C:/windows/system/config is corrupt type-o error... So i reinstalled windows over that folder(Yep big mistake, silly me)... and then i still experienced the problem so i formated the h/d , reinstalled a fresh installation onto the hd, did my drivers, installed SP2(got a win sp2 cd) and so on... (i've formated 3 times now and installed windows) so that hasnt helped. Only thing i can think of, which i'd like your views, is the Windows XP Pro SP1 could be the problem,it is a copied OEM cd, so maybe i should use a friends SP 2 cd?I dunn0:<

How are you conected to the unit?

Please don't say USB! Make sure you are connected with LAN cable if at all possible, then mae sure your router is in router and not modem mode - i.e. it can connect without the help of your PC... I can't see how it would disconnect like that...

I unfortunately don't know the unit well enough, but if you give me more details, I can get a manual to help more if you need it (you seem pretty tech savvy though).

Ed, nope its not USB, its through a network cable, and its Definatly a router, its the Billion 5100 Router, 4 Port router. it stays connected even if my pc is shut down... my dad can connect lan cable into his pc and its done.. connected.

Argh can you believe this, i even tried using my MS outlook for emails now, and it disconnects, and reconnects again! WTF!

my gran had one of those routers and had continual problems with it. even had a telkom tech admit to me on the phone that the router/modem you talking about 'is ****'

you say browsing is fine? is it really?

do something like opening a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd) and doing say "ping -t 196.25.1.1"

the problem with my gran's router was that it was almost like the router was resetting itself.

it would look something like this:

Pinging 196.25.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:

you can see how it dies, then comes back online. was very random too. well I say random but it would die every 45-60 seconds or so and remain dead for anything from 5-20 seconds. you wouldn't notice things like this when browsing normally because what'ld happen is you enter a URL, the browser tries to open the site, then say your line goes down for 10 seconds or so, your browser keeps trying, then line is back up before the request for site times out, and the page loads. similar thing happens with email. as long as you back online before it times out you'ld be oblivious to it disconnecting, whereas something like your game needs a constant connection (funnily I discovered this problem when I was trying to play a game :D)

at first I thought it was just the line or actual dial up wigging out, but when I i did the same ping but to the IP of the router, same thing happened.

took the router back to telkom, told them I wanted another one (actually asked for a single port or usb modem, don't know how they can give an old lady with one computer a 4 port modem, talk about taking advantage!), and it's been smooth sailing since then. hope this helps you out.

Thanks, the only problem though is i've had this modem for about a year now :(
