ADSL disconnects when weather gets bad

Well, not even bad.

Hope somebody can tell me what to do, I'd like to take up the issue with Telkom but whenever they send out a techie they expect me to replicate the fault - otherwise they don't do anything.

Except in this case the fault only occurs when either

* The wind blows quite hard
* It STARTS raining
* Lightning strikes or thunder claps nearby

It's like a scared dog. As soon as the weather becomes one notch more intense I get disconnected. I then have to restart my modem and in 90% of cases that helps. If it starts raining it'll disconnect. I'll restart, and it'll work again while it's raining. Provided the wind or rain doesn't kick up.

If I get a loud rumble it disconnects.

On a side note: my land line sometimes doesn't ring. The techie said it's the exchange not sending out a ringer signal or something.

So, is this my old router acting up (maybe it's become sensitive with age?). Damaged physical line? (I live in a complex and think I have a Telkom pole right outside. Lots of black wires on it. Would a photo help?) Exchange?

Thanks to anyone who offers some help. It rained a few days ago and it drove me up with the wall. With the rainy season approaching I'm really contemplating moving in with the mother in law and her stable line...

I have a feeling your attenuation is high and SNR very low, so whenever the weather gets bad the SNR lowers to a point where you cannot sync or have massive interference (like a lightning storm)

Post your line stats and we can help you further...

Downstream rate: 2048 kbps
Upstream rate: 512 kbps
PPPoE pass-through: Enabled

ADSL Line

Status: Cable connected
Line mode: G.DMT
Maximum line rate: 8128 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 23.4 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 34.1 dB (upstream)
Output power: 10.5 dBm (upstream)

Is that what you're looking for? I have a Gigaset sx762 router. So not sure how to get the SNR or more downstream stats...

I suspect you have exposed copper somewhere along the line which can be a biatch to find for the telkom guy.

My line runs between adjacent properties with lots of tree branches in the way. At one stage I would have disconnects when the wind blew or it rained. Tree branches swaying in the wind making contact with the feeder cable basically chaffed away the insulation on the cable in a few spots which caused all the issues. The guys ended up replacing a whole span of cable to sort the issue out but I suspect it will be back in a few years time as the trees are still there.

Disconnected all routers, faxes, filters etc from your line and just leave a single phone without filter connected, pick up the receiver and check if you can hear any noise, press 0 to get rid of the dial tone. Also check your attenuation & snr values under normal & problematic times.

Good luck.

Your attenuation is fine, I agree with the others and rekon it's a telkom issue, have them inspect your copper line, a while back they crossed my pair with a neighbors and my snr completely dissipeared

I had similar problems to OP's. Did some inspections on my line and found a complete mess. Here is one pic of their handy work. http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/7199/photo4azw.jpg

Can't find the pic of it, but one of the extension cables was completely exposed and looked like unorganized colourful spaghetti. Had to go into telkom shop with pics to escalete. Got fixed within a week after that. Now my only problem is a congestion exchange. :(

Damn... that really doesn't look pretty.

Thanks guys. I'll get the telkom techie out to check out why my phone doesn't ring and while he's here I'll ask him to get a ladder and inspect the wire pole outside.

If your phone doesn't ring and your snr is that bad it's definitely a telkom problem, in a way you're in luck as this problem can be solved
