ADSL drops on incoming call

We rarely get calls on our landline so this is an issue I haven't noticed before. When we get an incoming call our ADSL connection terminates some thirty seconds after the phone starts ringing. The modem will then reestablish the link.
This is what I know so far:
  • This only happens during incoming calls
  • It happens even if I disconnect the phone
  • I've tried different ADSL filters
  • I've tried three different modems
My ISP is MWEB but I believe the problem lies with Telkom.

You need to have a POTS filter installed at the line jack. This is typical if no filter is present. You can buy them at any Telkom Direct store and they usually also come with new ADSL routers.

Should this happen whilst a filter is present, some of the wiring can be faulty and Telkom would need to fix it.

The third case I have experienced this in is when a fax machine is coupled to the line and it happens when it answers the call. The fax unit is faulty in this case.

so it seems ringing current up to 70 volts ac.
This is where telkom covers itself with [up to speeds]
How far are you from exch.

If normal dictance, then somewhere your telephone paip is not fresh somewhere.

You can try ask telkom to move to another pair.
The fault can also be on their spliting unit in the exch.

We had a similar issue. Afrihost bumped our 6Mb line to 10Mb without checking the resulting signal strength. Our modem's signal strength (SNR) was sitting at 5.8 (6 and below is considered bad) at 10Mb. I knew the signal strength was bad, but didn't realize that it was a result of the line being bumped to 10Mb while we were too far from the exchange to support it. I thought it was a problem with the line itself. Telkom tech came out, cursed Afrihost for not doing their homework (our line is with Afrihost) and knocked the line back to 6Mb. SNR jumped back to 12 and we've been peachy since.

Moral of the story... it may be that your SNR is too low, and your line might be running too fast for your distance from the exchange. Telkom tech said it was a common problem and the ISPs are putting clients at unstable speeds, and the clients are obviously happy for the bump until they experience problems.

Check your modem SNR values.

Telkom technician was here. He says we're very far from the exchange. He suggests we ask Telkom to connect us to a UMC just up the road. Does anybody have any idea as to how we should go about doing that?
