Hi there, i'm new to this whole ADSL stuff, I just wanted to know will it make a difference with speed, etc... if i have a 10m extension cord from the phone jack to the ADSL router ?

Thanks
:)

Do you have an ethernet or USB only ADSL modem/router?

If you have an ethernet ADSL modem/router then rather use an ethernet cable to extend the distance from telephone socket to PC.

VINESH: I've done exactly what you've asked, and I don't recommend it. I had line attentuation issues, I think (the fact that I had the line running next to a home-made power extension may have had something to do with it). I would do as IC has suggested if you have a router/modem, and keep the line from the telephone socket to the router as short as possible. Rather get a cheapo switch/hub and plug the router into it. Then run ethernet cable from the switch/hub to the PC (I think you can go up to 75-100 metres quite safely, if I remember correctly - the network admins on this forum can confirm if this is feasible).

Thanks a lot for the advice :)
Its going to be an ADSL ethernet router.
I'm just getting prepared so soon as they come and install the line I'll know what to do :)

Thanks again.

Um - my wiring is a mess, and I've got about 5 metres of telephone cable lying on the floor, into which my adsl modem is plugged, then in the cieling as about another 15 meters of telephone cable that is eventually soldered into the original teklom entry point.

Degradation ? Dunno, I download from SAIX at 56 so all seems fine I suppose. I don't think that adding another 100m of telephone cable is going to be bad, unless you use crap quality wire.

Isn't the distance 3-5km supposed to be ok, what difference will another 10m make?

vinesh, you are very wise 1st researching @ MyADSL

Aaaaahhh - you don't have a modem/router yet :).

I think you will find that an ethernet ADSL modem/router is much more flexible than one attached to a PC via USB.

My 1st requirement for my ADSL device (router) is ethernet - I am simply not interested in being dragged down by the limitations of a USB attachment.

thanks alot :)

now just to decide which adsl router to get, its either the linksys wag54g or the billion 7402 .. what you guys suggest ?
