Hi ;)

Where can I get a good, fairly cheap filter, except at telkom?

Filters go like mad in our house (haven't been here for a while), but the DSL connection drops just after a call comes in, so I'm thinking it might be the filters again. Telscum asked us about R140 per filter last time around, which is insane.

Thanks
tera ;)

This ADSL disconnecting after a phone call jazz plagues our household as well. The thing is, the room with the router/modem has a split telephone line coming through the roof and I can't seem to find the filter.

If I plug the Netgear filter into the splitter it doesn't really help, which makes me think I need to place the filter somewhere else. Any advice?

I looked around for another place besides Telkom that sells them, i had no luck.

My filters from Telkom didn't cost more then R50 each (i cant remember the exact price)

So far no issues with the filters.

Ok, since Cloud mentioned the filters don't sort out the problem for him, is the solution to get a techie out? ;) Thanks for the replies.

I am not sure I understand what you mean by "the room with the router/modem has a split telephone line coming through the roof and I can't seem to find the filter."

But, you should have 1 line from the wall socket. This needs to be split into two (which is what i think you have).

1 end you attach your filter to and then you attach your phone/fax machine to the filter.

The other end, you use no filter and plug it straight into the modem/router.

Hope this helps.

I bought some of those filters at Matrix Computers Main Branch in Alberton. They were around R40 each.

I think cloud may have his filter in the wrong place.

The filter should never go between the modem/router and the line.

It always goes between the phone/fax and the line

Thanks, I'll get new filters and see if it makes a difference ;)

Try searching for a site Helkom, sure they will be able to help you out

I can get you one for R46.00...

Thanks Terence, although, I'll just ask one of my sisters who live about 40k's from me to get me two at their local Telscum shop, it works out easier and cheaper at the end of the day, delivery, waiting time, all that ;)

It helps, thanx.

To be honest, I suspect there is a royal balls-up somewhere. What I mean with split line is that the line coming through the room from the master bedroom to the actual room with the router / modem is attached to a little beige box with two female holes. The end where the line comes into the box is hardmoulded into it, i.o.w. not a plug.

I'll have to go and hunt the various phone jacks in our house to find out where there are filters and where theres not. Do I have to have a filter on each phone jack that connects to a phone?

Ok. I disconnected all the filters in the house. Not sure if it fixed the problem with the phone disconnecting the internet but I still have the problem with line dropping continuously between 19:30 and 21:00 in the evening.

I'm going to kill something.

Cloud, the filter as far as I know won't be the cause of the line disconnecting the ADSL, that's not what I meant.

A broken filter is broken, it just doesn't work, so you have to put a new filter on. You could possibly cause more disconnects and line noise on the phones if there are no filters.

I picked up the phone today, was a bit lazy, haven't been here in 3 months and it's definitely a physical line problem, you hear no dial tone at all except a loud cracking and scratching noise, like someone is kicking against a tin bucket filled with sand pebbles.

I'll have to report the fault, since no filter is going to fix that ;)
