Having an ADSL line installed and have been told that there is a need to have the necessary phone/fax/etc filters installed.

Could someone explain what these filters are. Are they hardware or software?

Hardware : A teensy weensy little device that seperates "voice" and "data" from each other so that the peep using "voice" does not hear the "data".

Like so:
1 - Telephone line.
2 - Filter
3.1 - Telephone/Fax/Normal Modem/2nd phone/pabx...
3.2 - ADSL Modem/Router

Basically every telephone, fax, or analogue modem needs to have a filter. For obvious reasons your adsl router/modem must not have a filter so you generally have the line split straight out of the wall.

You can pick them up from any telkom shop.

If you have multiple phones connected to your line, try and install the filter at the point where the line enters the building and connect the rest of the rats nest to the filter. It'll save having to purchase a filter per phone and will stop the line from being loaded by a bunch of filters.
