Hi,

I'm finally going for ADSL. I'm just not a fan of any wireless offering.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing:

1. Get Telkom Analogue on a Closer 1 package to avoid the unnecessary installation fee of R500.

Normal line rental is +-R131 plus R500 installation
Closer 1 is R145, no installation.

2. Get 384 ADSL @ R152 (self install, so no cost)
I'm considering a 24-month contract (384 line only, not ISP) to get the free Netgear Wifi ADSL modem. Will I regret this? Should I buy the modem cash rather? I do intend having ADSL going forward.

3. Afrihost 2GB @ R58

Anything else I'm missing?

Feedback appreciated

Depending on what you need (wireless, built in switch, etc.), you might end up paying less if you buy the modem separately. Also, do not get a modem from Telkom, since some of the modems have been known to have software issues.

Nope. That would be all. Most modems come with a microfilter included in the sales package. Remember that you'll need one for every phone installed in your home.

Do not get a contract with anyone, especially Telkom. Buy your own modem - it will be better and cheaper.

When I first signed up for ADSL in 2007 I thought the worst thing in the world I could do was sign up for the free router with a 24 month contract. At that time, Neotel was going to change everything, and after that, Seacom was going to change everything, so I was expecting to switch ISPs as soon as I could.

Two years later, nothing has changed. Realistically, Telkom will always be providing the cheapest bandwidth just because they can undercut everybody else. So you probably won't regret signing the 2 year contract. Local-loop unbundling is still two years away anyway.

Also, you need to double check that you can still get free installation if you take the Closer option. There is also stories of Telkom store personnel saying the self-install option is no longer available, but they are lying.

Yes, take the self-install. You do not need to actually install anything.

Do NOT take out a contract.

i have to disagree here....
folks just got adsl at home, had to get a contract with telkom for the line cause the router was too exspensive to buy cach at the moment...

Don't buy the thing from Telkom!

Mine cost R700 new and it is awesome and has lasted more than two years and it is never switched off.

For that much you can even get a wireless one these days.

Finally, changes are happening. Do NOT sign a contract.

too late... they have had adsl for bout a month now... a wireless router was just too exspensive for them at the time

See my post above. This is exactly what was being said in 2007 with Neotel. Truth is, signing a contract with Telkom for the next two years is not such a bad idea.

agree...
and after the two years the router is yours!!!

Can't say I agree. Things are happening atm;)

Well it's nearly 2010 now and things ARE actually changing. Stop encouraging people to sign contracts.

Shame on you.

I know, I had exactly the same attitude back then. But like I said, we're not going to see any real change within the next two years, and any changes that are there will be matched by Telkom so you won't have a problem if you're signed into a contract.

Sorry, I don't mean to encourage. I hate Telkom with every fibre of my being. I'm just saying it would not be so unwise as everybody says it is, especially if you are strapped for cash.

Honestly, you could probably get a better router if you just buy it yourself, so if you have R700 to spare rather do that.

Yeah, I know what you are saying and if it was two years ago then you would not have lost out.

But supporting the monopoly, even if they are the cheapest, does not help the overall situation in this country.
