Hi all

I'm looking to get an adsl line installed for gaming, and I was hoping you could advise me as to the best option(s). I have a budget of about R1000 per month.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

thanx in advance

all depends what type of gaming... local or international... local games like bf2 and the like will run almost perfect on 384 + shaped account... international games how ever u would have to ask someone else...

that's not what I've seen so far

atm I'm gaming at an i-cafe that has a shaped adsl account and it's impossible to game before 17h00 (even if no-one is downloading on the same line). If someone is downloading it becomes unplayable even after 17h00. I'm talking pings of 500+ :(

this has been my experience so far...

I suppose it could have something to do with the fact that there are like 7 pc's connected to the 1 line...???

isn't an unshaped line preferable when gaming?

i really don't want to get a shaped line, pay for it, and then it's useless for what I want to do - I'm ussually very careful when it comes to big purchases

:)

...and thanx for the warm welcome. very much appreciated

:D

Paragon you have to realise that telkom is #$%^ing us over backwards and there really isnt much choice atm, if you have the cash for an unshaped connection go for it, otherwise get iburst and wait for the SNO like me :D

dude - Telkom rants aside. I have ADSL 192 and Telskum 3Gig account.

For local site (SGS servers) this works pretty damn good (50ms pings).

btw - play mainly CS:Source

I have tried some of the overseas FEAR servers, but no good - too much lag

Bottom line: ADSL fine for local. I know there are other proxy options that will improve overseas gaming experience - check around on the forum

my isdn was so much more stable than 384k adsl playing q3 :/

Could be the number of PCs on the line it could also be an IS account, they been having trouble with their network. And are u playing on servers overseas or in SA?

I Have 384 line and 5 (Yes five) shapped accounts from datapro... No problems playing local any time of the day...

get 384 adsl with an saol 10 gig account

you'll just make the 1000 rand mark :)

or get 192 adsl with an allyoucaneat.co.za 30 gig account
again just make the 1000 mark

I know many people playing World of Warcraft International on a ADSL Shaped account via Telkom Internet and that was fine. As was said above, it depends what you are doing, FPS for example will not be the best internationally, but playing CSS for example on a local SAIX server is perfect.

Shaped is fine for local gaming.
Unshaped is primarily for lower international latency.

192 works fine for me.
Play BF2 all day no problems on SAIX

I sit on a 192 line and play:

Guild Wars (not that it's a big bandwidth sucker)
Medievia
Warcraft 3

They all run spiffily with not a problem anywhere.

thanx for all the replies

i think i have decided to get the all-you-can-eat account

i play on the sgs servers, so only local gaming. i was just worried about the shaped/unshaped issue - i'm a bit of a DSL noob :p

I handed in my application at telkom, so now for "the long wait"

really appreciate the help

:D

...o, and i play mostly bf2, q4 and starting Guild wars now :D
