Hi everyone,

So I got my ADSL set up last night. Alls working, but I dont understand how it actually works. What I mean is that at my mothers office she can connect to her adsl line like you would with dial up via a short cut etc. So you can connect and disconnect as you please.

With the SIO I got the WIFI modem, but it seems its always connected. What if I want to just work on my pc and dont want to connect to the net and waste my cap etc. I turned off the modem....but when I wanted to surf again and turned it on, it did not connect to the net. I had to reboot my PC, which will become annoying.

So how do I connect and disconnect from the net when I want to? Is it possible?

You can use the router in bridged mode and have each computer initiate its own pppoe connection.

However - from what I can see from my usage accounts the amount of data you would consume while not intentionally accessing the internet (ie browsing or getting email) should be negligible as long as you are free of any unwanted nasties (viruses, spyware, etc.)

its probably because your mother has a usb modem or a pci one, and with a router it stores the connection settings on that. if you log on to the router with its IP i think you can disconnect it there.

A router can store the information and initiate the pppoe connection on behalf of the computers it serves but the majority of them can also be used in bridged mode.

This is very useful if you want to have a number of computers each using their own account or if you want to run software to send local traffic over one account and international over another.

What modem do you have? I have the Mega 100WR - also came with self install. I don't know how to do bridged mode. How does one do it?

Not sure how your router works but after some experimentation with mine it turned out that I didnt actually have to do anything. I could have the router use one connection and have the PCs initiate their own as well.

YMMV ;)

OK, thanks. I will just leave it on then as my pc is clean. Should be fine. I also have the same one....wanna try now and get the wireless working. Have been told its a tad difficult. will have to see! ;)

With the recent developments in WEP cracking go straight for WPA and save yourself from having to change it later.
