Hey guys,

Not sure if anyone of you are from Namibia or have friends in Namibia, but the rumor has it that Telecom Namibia is launching ADSL in Namibia in a month's time.

This is great news for any Techno Junkie (like me). :D

However....a rumour is going around that they won't launch the product to ISP's but want to handle all Internet Traffic themselves.

What was it like when ADSL were launched in S.A.? Did Telkom S.A. try to bypass the ISP's?

More info on ADSL would be welcomed. :)

Tx
A confused user...

Hi,
As far as I can recall telkom was the only isp that could give you adsl. They did trails first with a selected group of people, as we all know telkom basically have a monopoly on the international bandwidth so you still have to go with them, in theory any way. So I think that Telecom Namibia would probably be the only ones providing adsl access and acounts, later maybe isp's will enter the market, I am not familiar with telecoms regulations in Namibia so can't really comment can only speculate.

For any further info on adsl feel free to browse the forums, the search function is your friend, any other stuff can be asked I am sure me and the other myadsl forumites would be glad to answer any questions you may have.

One interesting thing for me would be the pricing, so please keep us informed on what happens. Always interested about Telecoms in neighboring countries.

I thought CDMA was being phased out in most places in the world.
I know Telstra (Australia's version of Telkom) are phasing out CDMA in favour of 3G and I remember reading reports years ago about the USA providers also dumping CDMA.
Is CDMA still alive and kicking? Maybe they sell all the old equipment to African countries. :D

Anyway wireless solutions aren't as good as a decent copper connection.
The mobility may be nice but the reliability and cost seem to be worse than a land line even though they shouldn't be. I mean try use Edge, 3G, HSDPA, etc. to download a few gigs of service packs and patches for XP and see what MTN or Vodacom charge you compared to an ADSL offering.

Even iBurst seem to be kind of expensive but they shouldn't be - they haven't got thousands of km/s of copper to keep working.

I wonder how line of sight will go down in Windhoek, with all the hilly surroundings that is. Maybe they can put up high sites on Sam's palace roof, think that should be high enough :)

Lol

Yeah, lots of things coming our way....

Apparently 3G / EDGE / CDMA / HSDPA / WiMax and ADSL are getting launched in December.

It will be chaos in two weeks time... :p

Have a great weekend.

Bye

LOL, the sad truth is that Telkodemonopolies in SA, is still trying to bypass 'independent' ADSL ISPs [and succeeding], by punting TelkodemonopoliesHindernet [the monopoly's own retail ISP, but this forum and various other sites like HeLLkom make it very difficult for Telkodemonopolies to punt its own ISP and Telkodemonopolies has not been allowed to advertise itself on MyADSL...:D

PS: Welcome to MyADSL :).
