Hello everyone

I currently live in Sundra (Rietkol to be precise) and I am looking at getting ADSL for my gaming / downloading needs.

Was wondering if anyone here is in that area and has ADSL? Telkom says it shows as unsupported on thier system, but i know that 2 streets down there is a guy with an active ADSL line. They told me to get his phone number so that they can check it for me.

Also, will a 2mb line be good enough for xbox gaming as well as some downloading? (that is if 2mb is supported)

Thanks

According to Broadbandtstats.co.za Sundra is supported: http://broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/RSUN

Wether this means your local box is remains to be determined, but if someone has ADSL that close then there shouldn't be an issue - try pestering them.

2mb should be just fine for gaming and downloads, hell even 1mb is about as much as you need for general gaming (ping times will not change from 1mb > 2mb). Downloads will obviously be a bit faster, but the 2mb upgrade will only happen at the end of the month (24th).

I would just go for Mweb all inclusive 1mb, as it is only R339 a month and you are likely to be charged a fair bit more for 2mb. If you are going to make the jump up to 2mb you may as well go for 4mb with Afrihost :D. Just remember that the 384kb > 1mb upgrade will only be happening in October, at which point the Mweb price will kick in.

Hi Jackshiels

Thanks for the reply. will defenitely llok into the Afrihost route. When you say Mweb all inclusive, do you mean uncapped or only that line rental is included?

thanks again

All inclusive = the ADSL line rental + uncapped data. This excludes the cost of a phone line for voice calls, though. Afrihost are currently running an 80% off for two months deal, meaning 4mb will only cost R80 for data alone (plus R425 for the 4mb line rental). Grand total R505 a month for two months isn't bad! If you don't get your line within this period, then PM me and I'll get you 50% off your first month.

Regardless I'm sure your line will take a little time to get installed, meaning my ideas here may not be worthwhile by the time you are ready. Afrihost may not be the cheapest 2mb uncapped provider by the time all ISP's have decided on pricing, so don't just go by me. Shop around and see what you can find.

Soooo, contacted Telkom with the number of the adsl line they needed. Confirmed, i can have adsl.

so they ask me again where i stay and i give them the address. confirm that there are houses in my street with working lines. (this was on saturday). forgot my id at home so i told them i will do the appl today. on driving home i notice that most of the lines are missing from pole to pole. take pictures of this and show them this morning. the rep tells me that if i want a connection i will have to pay to have the lines fixed as it looks like a problem area because i stay next to a field and lines are constantly going missing in my street....

so i guess no adsl for me :(

I have however tried my inlaw's 3g this weekend and it works beautifully. plays various games lag free. decided to go the vodacom route as adsl is now going to be very expensive to fix all those lines, not to mention the downtime when someone decides to steal it again.
