Hi guys,

http://www.zol.co.zw/index.php?link=corp lists some ADSL packages.
7,026,500 ZWD for a 512k connection with a 2.4GB cap. And they quite clearly state they only bill for international traffic. Sounds alright?

So I check the exchange rate. According to www.xe.com/ucc:
1.00 ZAR = 34.9948 ZWD

Is this 34 ZWD and some change? That makes R200,786.97 per month??

Can this be?

Official and black market exchange rate are completely different. It's several thousand times weaker on the black market, so divide your rand price by a few thousand and it will make more sense.

I know about the black market (In fact I had a hard time finding a legal way to buy currency last time I was there - even the guys in the bank offer you money off the books....). But how does that kind of price work out compared to what, say, middle-class folk earn?

Gosh, I'm just amazed their even have ADSL in Zimbabwe. I thought a dial-up connection would be an extreme luxury!

I pity the guys over there in Zim...

...all of a sudden it puts things into perspective...

Telkom's probably going to use Zim as excuse that they're still the cheapest of the bunch...
