ADSL Inconsistencies

I've had pretty slow internet for quite a while now, getting worse duing peak hours.

Using Axxess prepaid and Internet Solutions uncapped with a 1MB line.

here's a trace to google with Axxess prepaid:

The problem is, speaking to Telkom yields different advice every time I call, so I have no idea what the problem could be.

Sometimes they tell me it's because my exchange (Edenvale) is congested, and my line is fine.

Sometimes the tell me my attenuation (29db) is too high and is the cause. (logged a fault for that, waiting for a technician).

Sometimes they blame my ISP.

Which of these scenarios is more likely, and what's the best way to get it resolved?

Also, why is the ISP routing through MTNBusiness? Is this standard proceedure?

Thanks!

Latencies like that indicate exchange/DSLAM or some other Telkom infrastructure congestion.

The ISPs can shape your connection, but that should affect the latencies like that! Typically it only affects the download/upload speed.

29dB downstream line attenuation is fine, unless you're trying to get 10Mbps, in which case it may lead to a low SNR margin and connectivity issues. If you have a 4Mbps ADSL connection, then you can typically go up to about 42dB downstream line attenuation before you'll start experiencing issues.

Axxess and Afrihost is using MTN's infrastructure, so it's normal for you to see mtnbusiness in your trace route.

If you've already logged numerous issues where you complained about congestion and Telkom just keeps on closing the tickets/faults, then I'd suggest that you Tweet @TelkomZA and include your fault reference number.

Well i am from Klerksdorp and have the exact same issues as Glingfram. I have called and opened numerous complaint with Telkom but never seem to get anywhere. I also have another thread open about the same thing. From common knowledge it seems to be exchange congestion because i use Openweb uncapped , Afrihost Uncapped as well as the Afrihost Free GIG account to test with.

My speeds vary from between 100 k/s up to 430 k/s after 12 midnight. I have just reopened another ticket with Telkom and have been warned that they will charge me call out of R205 if it for nothing. Well i guess even if the line is fine and i show the tech guy the test results he will have to accept there is a problem .
My point is the speeds are so vastly differrant.

My speeds are as follows.

Download Speed: 1365 kbps (170.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 429 kbps (53.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 57 ms
8/18/2013 4:36:14 PM Today Sunday afternoon

Download Speed: 924 kbps (115.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 423 kbps (52.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 29 ms
8/17/2013 4:48:41 PM Saturday Afternoon

Last Result:
Download Speed: 3419 kbps (427.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 429 kbps (53.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 35 ms
8/18/2013 2:30:33 AM Early Sunday Morning

Thanks, great answer! If this callout doesn't fix the problem, I'll tweet Telkom.
